does anyone know if the ‘Midi Merge’ setting in the Phatty actually passes clock information out? i’m trying to get clock and key info passed through to another instrument, and so far it doesn’t seem to transmit the tempo, which makes me wonder what the purpose of midi merge is at all on the phatty…
…or do i need to just go out and get a midi merge box…

merge merges midi notes and controller data; not realtime messages (like clock).
What’s the purpose? In case you need to merge notes or controller data, it’s useful. 
Why does it not merge clock? Because the processor isn’t so fast, and has much else to do… it was decided that merging clocks was too expensive. Plus we did an informal survey and found that it’s a common thing for soft MIDI merge features not to pass clocks.
