MF-102 make it track musically

How can I make a attenuator or continuator what ever he said in this video. So I can make my MF-102 track musically.

This RM trick is described in the ‘Lord Of The Ring Modulator’ article (available on KnobTweak). You don’t need to build an attenuator for this - you can use an attenuator in the CP-251 (or a VX-351 with the Voyager).

This technique also works with a FreqBox.

How long does it take to set this up. I use my 102 and 107 for many different things and textures, live. I would love to experiment with using them as additional VCOs but not if it takes a long time to set up. Clearly, I need a dedicated 102 and 107.

Thanks for the reply Greg I don’t have CP-251 but I do have a Radio Shack.

Or, start your set with the song(s) that use it in “track” mode so you can have it up and going before playing, then after those songs you are free to tweak the knobs and mess up the settings.

Dave,

There might be a DIY circuit on this website:
http://www.musicfromouterspace.com/
They also have links to other music DIY pages.

But I must say, the CP-251 is amazingly useful and can be had for under $300 on the used market.

Azotus in that video had made an attenuator circuit for the cable that he used on there.

But once you get everything specified, the Ringmod sets up suprisingly faster than the Freqbox to get it to track properly.

What keyboard are you using to make it track?

Eric

EricK I’m using my Little Phatty keyboard for that. Kevin can you shed some light on this for me

I really don’t think that youll need to attenuate it at all then.

Have you really tried it following the guidelines of the LOTRM doc?

Azotus was using a Rogue, so his needed attenuation.

I think that I can hook the Voyager up and the Freq will track without attenuation. Im sure the ringmod is the same way.

I wish i could help you on the attenuation circuit though. I think azotus told me its something to do with something from radio shack that requires a tiny screwdriver to change attenuation…not a really awesome way to do that but certianly cheaper than a cp251.

Eric

As far as I know, you can’t do the “ring mod as additional oscillator” trick on the Little Phatty without adding a midi-to-CV box into the equation.

Well, you can in a very rudimentary fashion - as a drone - but you can’t track pitch without adding midi-to-CV.

Bryan

The article goes over why the ring mod needs attenuation to track correctly.

Yeah you are right.

Its been awhile since I tried to get my ringmod to track anything.

SORRY lol.

I didn’t think about both of your points either…totally forgot that the LP has virtually no outputs.

Eric

EricK, the LP has NO outputs…except for audio. :unamused: And that tiny screwdriver adjuster from Radio Shack is called a trimpot.

Yes but what ohm would the pot be? Kevin we need some help over here. Amos?

Kevin or Amos can elaborate, or tell me I’m wrong, but for some reason my gut tells me 100k should suffice…maybe even 50k.

The potentiometers in the CP-251 (the version with the red jack nuts) are 50K ohm.

Thanks for all the help. Radio Shack here I come.

All it did when I wired it up was raise and lower the volume.

What signal were you attenuating? It sounds like you were attenuating the audio output.

Are you trying to do this with your Little Phatty or the Rogue? You need a pitch CV to attenuate and you aren’t going to get that with the Little Phatty. I’m not sure if the Rogue has a pitch CV out, though I doubt it.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I think the only way to do this with the Little Phatty is to introduce a MIDI-to-CV converter to get a pitch CV.

I’m using the Little Phatty and it does have pitch CV in.
