Message to mee3d - help!

Maybe, this is not about Moog exactly, but I saw in your equipment list, that you own the rare Jen SYNX 508.
Well, a friend of mine have one too, but it’s broken.Any service manual copy?
We could be happy if we 'll get it running again -I love it’s string machine sounds.
I even sent emails to the neighborhood country (I’m from Greece) but they couldn’t help.
Thanks a lot!

Hi Nikos

Yes, I have 2 Jen SYNX 508’s . . one is in mint condition and the other, while fully working is a little battered. Currently they are both on my work bench in bits until i can get the time to restore the battered one.

My original idea was to put three soundcards from the not so good condition one into the good condition 508 to make it 8 note poly but for some reason the three extra cards are not recognized . . almost like there needs to be an amendment made somewhere (firmware, trace de/soldered?) to allow the notes generated from the keyboard to be asigned to these extra voice cards.

I do not have any manuals for them either . . . and i have been trying to get one for 3 years.

Nice sounding machine though . . totally underated In my opinion . . must get them back up and running.

Mal

Thanks for the quick answer,
We have the user manual for the SYNX 508, but I think it’s one of these synths that you can operate without a manual. In case that you’re interested, I can photocopy it for you. I know of two examples of this synth:
both belong to friends of mine, bought around late 90’s from a store here in Athens who were keen to offload them in prices below 500 euros!
Both have problem with the sequencer operation and as I told you, the one stopped working! Andy Horrel who has a big synth collection in the U.K. has one SYNX too but no service manual.
Now, let’s go back talking about Moogs!
BTW, sorry for the bad Eglish!

oh, by the way both of the 508’s I know, have five voices.
It’s rumored that only 50 made, and with the 2 of yours, we go to counting 5 existant models, together with the one reviewed in synth site!

My serial numbers are 0004 and 0150 . . which is a little strange if only 50 were made (actually I thought it was only 40). The early one - 0004, is very different inside to the later model and sounds very different.

I would love a copy of the user manual Nikos . . if that’s possible - let me know.

Mal

My email is: nicolabico@yahoo.com so if you want to, write and send your home address and in almost two weks I will sending you the photocopied manual.
And as always, sorry for the bad English!
Nikos

 Well, I never was good in maths:so we count again, there’s two SYNX’s of yours,
two I know, one reviewed in synth site and one in Andy Horrel’s collection. They are six!!
By the way the manual is on it’s way to you Mal.
Best wishes
Nikos

I was also in contact with a man in Germany, he has a mint one but after very many . . very strange emails I decided to stay clear . . so that’s another one, that’s 7.

I will be putting my 2 back together next week Nikos . . I will post photos . . One of mine has yellow LEDs instead of red LEDs !!

Thanks for the manual my friend.

Mal

Hi Nikos

Many thanks for copying the owners manual for me, it arrived today.

Given the “homemade” nature of this manual my guess is that there are less Synx 508’s out there then people think . . there’s probably only 30-40 ever built and as my two are so different to each other I bet JEN never really stopped development of it . . in some ways the 30-40 out there are probably all prototypes.

I doubt if you’ll ever find a service manual . . I would imagine this was hand drawn and is either with the inventor or lost.

Great that the manual tells me how to asign the extra voices . . I will try that and then put together one 8 voice unit in excellent condition.

What is wrong with yours?

If you know what the problem is perhaps I could send you the spare parts? (I will be keeping the 2 spare voice cards though as they are full of Curtis chips).

Let me know

Mal

Have had a Jen 508 sat on the shelf doing nothing for ages, I’ve just set her up to see what it can do. Also thought I’d browse tinterweb, try and find a manual to work that bloody sequencer and I came across you guys in this forum. So damn excited I registered instantly to increase your Jen Synx 508 count to 8.
Regards all, didn’t know it was so rare.

DELETED

was just looking up synx 508, i have one that has been gathering dust for many years now, not working proprely, think i paid about £20 for it from a guy at the bbc in manchester that had 2. the sustain pot had gone on it when i first started messing with it, so it kicked out constant tone untill i kill the sustain. i wasn’t so good at electronics back then, not a lot better now, but will be getting it back soon as been storing it in wales at mothers house, so it didn’t clog up my past miniscule flats. lets see what happens with it. will post serial no too when i get it.

so that makes 9

I have serial 01144 so that makes 10.

My Jen Synx 508 has been stored away as I found it too quirky to play. It truly has a mind of its own. 10 years in a damp shed in England and it still works but has even more “personality”.

I was interested to see the serial numbers of the others, mine seems way higher. Maybe there were more produced than was first thought. I bought mine in the early 1990s from a bric-a-brac shop in Windsor and I have no information about its previous history.

HA HA…I got one too!!!I got it out of the local paper 11 years ago for £25 and i love that thing :0) so that’ll make it 11??
Long live the jen synx508

Well you can make it 12 as just got a working one in Malta (EU)… rumours have it there are about 2-4 originally imported units. Mine is Serial number 1129.

Hi. Someone here still have the manual of the JEN SYNX 508?
Thanks
