LP: Can I poly chain with a different midi synth?

Hello,

I have a little phatty and I’m wondering if I could poly chain it with a different MIDI synth (for example an Oberheim SEM Pro)?

The little phatty seems to have the logic for distributing polyphonic notes across MIDI, but I’m just wondering if this is done through some proprietary method or whether it can be understood by other manufacturers?

It would be an awesome feature if you could send out polyphonic MIDI notes to different channels from the little phatty. So for example if you set the MIDI out channel on the little phatty to be channel 3, then every extra note played will be sent to subsequent channels (eg 4, 5, 6). That way I could tell the SEM Pro to listen to channel 4 and I would get a hybrid duophonic synth!

If this doesn’t work, then is there there another device which can do this?

Thanks!

This is an interesting problem that I’ve often wondered about. The best suggestion I can give to to set your phatty into polychain mode and hook up some sort of midi monitor to try and decipher what is going on. Then, if you’re a using a computer, try to use a flexible midi routing program such max/msp to create a DIY solution. I’m considering the midi-solutions programmable box to accomplish this(without a computer), but for now am happy with a moog+SEM duophonic setup using high-note/low-note priority.

I’d be very interested in what sort of midi data comes in from the polychain mode. What would really be cool is to create a polychain conversion program with some of the DSI synths, which also support polychain. such as the mopho or the tetra.
