Little Phatty stage 2 vs Taurus 3

Ok, so I am only going to be buying one of the two. Money isn’t an issue at all but sound is. Right now I am leaning more toward the Little Phatty however I would like to get other peoples input. What do you all think? Anybody can give me thoughts on the sound character on each of these. I really would like Moog to just continue to produce the Taurus 3 and not feel like I have a weight hanging over my head to rush out and buy one, but again, I am only buying ONE of these two synths. I will mainly use it for electronic music production, and I want something that can give me big basses. In particular, how do you all think the bass sounds between these two are when compared against each other?

Thank you all in advance,
B

Well as a Taurus 3 owner (nearly) I may be biased. However I would say that the LP (still don’t like that name) will be, by its very nature, more flexible. The Taurus is a niche product (less than 1000 units) which fills a small niche of people that want bass that can kill and want it in a pedal format.

If the only sound you were going for was bass I would say T3. If you have other synths that can fill the rest of the spectrum then a T3 would be great. If this is your only or main synth then the LP is going to be the more flexible choice.

I must say though that the T3s are turning out to be much more flexible than the original Taurus and has a five octave range over MIDI, so all is not lost.

That didn’t help, did it?

No it did help, thank you. That is more along my line of thinking. Who knows, I may just end up buying both and being done with it. Plus I could patch them together and get a nice duo phonic synth setup.

I’d like to add that it also depends on the type of bass you want. The Taurus envelopes are more suited for bass guitar type sounds, whereas the LP does drum sounds very well. The Taurus bass is also rich in harmonic overtones, more than the Little Phatty.

Another way to look at it … you’re only going to buy one right now, but in the future you might still want both. Since the Taurus is likely to be much less available than the LP as time goes by, I’d get that now since you will still have lots of LP options later on, but probably not vice-versa. Also, if you change your mind it should be fairly easy to flip the Taurus and get an LP without losing any money in the deal.

What else do you have in your studio?

If it’s like your first synth purchase, I think you’ll want keys.

Yeah these are my first two real synth purchases… and I caved, I got them both.
The wife is surprisingly supportive so I’m not going to complain!
Thank you everyone for your input!

Congrats, and good move! I also own both (with a DSI Prophet '08 in the middle of the “Moog sandwich”), but if I could only have one Moog, it would be the Taurus - the best bass synth I have ever owned, without a doubt. You can snag used Phattys all day on the 'Bay for great prices, but the lower number of available Tauri ensures their value will always be a bit higher. Fire up that Taurus arpeggiator & play solo on the Phatty over it - doesn’t get much better than that!
