hi all. im new. i see greg from the reggie board is here, i should have figured. waves
anyways, ive never played a musical instrument in my life,…well no, the recorder in like 5th grade. but i really like the sounds people make with moogs and all that. i just dont know where to start? i know nothing about keyboards/pianos etc and im just dont know where to begin…any help?
thanks.
I was exactly like that when I first started 6 months ago. I probably hadn’t touched an instrument for a decade before that.
I would say the easiest way to begin is to try and buy/borrow an analogue synthesizer and see how you get on, just fiddle around with the knobs, see what everything does, how it changes the aspect of the sound, and try and learn which notes are which.
i was curious which you would recommend?
well you can go to any place that sells keyboards and check out the analog modeling synths which features the adsr knobs [attack-decay-sustain-release] to get a feel for fiddling with the knobs. also if you can find any moog manuels online you can read up about the synth. they are exremely informative and well written. also try out a microkorg, if a moog isn’t within your grasp for for the micro, its a good synth ![]()
Hey Aneviljedi,
Another cool thing about analog synths is YOU DON’T NEED TO KNOW HOW TO PLAY AN INSTRUMENT. People from Brian Eno to the DFA production team(Rapture, Black Dice) use synth for texture and atmosphear. You can just twist knobs until you get a feel for what each knob does then repeat it. NO THERORY REQUIRED…have fun.
Yeah you’re right he doesn’t need to know how to play an instrument (obviously he must be cabable of pressing keys
) but he’ll learn when he starts playing tunes on it, because i get the feeling he might want to play something he’s heard before.
I admit I didn’t touch my Voyager for quite some time after I got my Pro-One, and I experimented with the knobs until I got a general idea of what everything did, then I the other day i went back to the Moog, and I started getting some great sounds out of it. I was probably a bit foolish starting off with a serious piece of equipment like that in the first place.
