How does Frequency Modulation work?

I’m questioning myself what the 3-1 FM switch exactly does!

When I try to reproduce the 3-1 FM with a modulation bus, i get different results. Is this because of the depth of the modulation of the 3-1 FM (which seems to be much more than what i can do with the modbus), or is there something mighty going on? Someone once told me, that the dx7 uses pm instead of fm, maybe the 3-1 fm is also something special…?

Brian Kehew demonstrates the FM functions on the Voyager -
also using the red buttons to the right of the 3-1 FM.

One is linear FM, the other is exponential FM. I forget which is which.
