Grandmother MIDI issue

Hi all,

my name is Lars and its nice to meet you all here.

i am new to Moog, using a Grandmother and a Mother 32. (Planning to buy a DFAM or 0-Coast, not sure yet, to have even more patching options) But actually I am getting crazy with these two ladies.

How they are connected: Out of DAW to Grandmother via USB-Midi, from there to Mother via MIDI OUT or THRU, does not change the game. New Firmware installed on both, Midi channel OUT from GM and all the other preferences must be Ok. I can play the M with GM keyboard when connected via USB OUT. But even if here also are all preferences made, M does not Start/Stop. Also I cannot “reach” the M sitting behind the GM out of Ableton on her own Midi Channel. For me it seems, the GM does not provide everything that is needed.

I simply want the GM and M be MIDI clocked to Ableton via GMs USB connection and the M via a simple Midi cable from the GM. Can anybody give me an idea what is wrong? There is no need to send anything out the DAW to mother.

It would be great if anyone could help. If I forgot something due to the rules I am very sorry, and yes I did not take a look if this topic was active already. Hope this is fine for you, because time is critical at the moment.

Unfortunately, what you are trying to do won’t work. USB midi information is not passed onto midi din, or vice versa.
This is not just a Moog thing, it’s the way the vast majority of USB midi ports on synths work.
You could try using CV/gate, plus clock, between the Moogs, or invest in a separate midi interface for your PC.
