just found this
thanks for posting this! Awesome ![]()
At the Moog both at NAMM last week they had a LP with an additional 3 Slims chained together as a 4-voice, and it sounded fantastic. It makes me wonder if it is possible to build a 1u rack with all the Slim Phatty guts but no knobs, displays, etc.; just a bare box that would be controlled by a LP. I think that would be the closest to getting a polysynth Moog for a “reasonable” price.
that’s duo phonic, and what do all those hand signals mean?
wow… did you resurrect a nearly year old thread to be a jerk?
Technically duophonic is polyphonic as in, mono = 1 and poly = more than 1. To me, duophonic in its more traditional synth usage is like the Arp Odyssey where it’s technically a 2 osc mono synth that allows you to separately trigger the 2nd osc.
“Technically”,poly means many,duo means two,end of story.
No, not end of story. Do some research. A word is defined by its usage, not the other way around. Duophony is the simplest form of polyphony. Poly as a prefix has more than one meaning. Confusing, I know. One of its meanings is many. Another happens to be more than one. In the case of the word polyphony, the prefix poly is being used to mean more than one not many.
O.k., so poly can mean more than one.You buy a poly synth from ebay.Only two keys can be played simultaneously. Are you going to conclude that it’s alright, because according to your definition of poly, that’s correct?
monophonic: Only 1 note can be played at a time.
duophonic: A synth that has 2 (or more) oscillators. If 2 or more keys are pressed, 1 osc is assigned to each press. If only 1 key is pressed, all osc’s are assigned to one note.
polyphonic: A synth that can have 2 or more voices. Each voice is assigned to a key press. If a synth has a polyphony of 2 with 2 oscillators per voice, it basically has 2 monophonic synths with 2 oscillators each, giving a total of 4 oscillators. When 2 keys are pressed, the synth will assign 1 key press per voice in succession. In a LP & SP polyphony setup, the LP acts as the master synth (voice 1). All commands stack to SP (voice 2). When playing a polyphonic note, the LP will play the first note and then the LP will send the second note down the chain to the SP. When the total number of voices are reached, it will drop the first note and start the chain over again.
So, having more than 1 phatty in a chain is a Polyphonic synth.
End of story

So a man with two wives is “technically” a duogamist?

Then a man with three wives is a Newt!
