Firmware 1.2.0: Sequencer DUO Mode and LOCAL Control off

Consider the following setup using the Sub 37 keyboard as a MIDI Controller and the Sub 37 synthesizer as sound module :

  • Sub 37 Local Controll off (KEYS, WHEELS, PANEL)
  • Sub 37 MIDI OUT (USB) routed to DAW/Host (e.g. MainStage) channel strip MIDI In
  • DAW/Host channel strip MIDI Out routed to Sub 37
  • Using a DUO mode sound with a sequencer with 2 notes per step

The sequence will not play as expected regardless of the Arpeggiator MIDI OUT MODE:

  • If MIDI OUT KEYS is selected, the second pitch is not interpreted at all.
  • If MIDI OUT SEQ is selected, the second pitch transposes unpredictably (also each time a key is pressed). How it transposes is dependent on the Sequence. In one instance I found that all of a sudden OSC1 followed the pitch 2 pattern while OSC 2 followed pitch 1.

Bottom Line: The Sequencer is only usable for DUO mode patches if the Sub 37 is put fully in LOCAL mode.

With the example patch “Sequencer DUO Test 01” attached. Play the following note sequence:

voice 1: C4 G3
voice 2: G3 A3 G3 A3 E3 D3 E3 D3

Sounds fine with local control on, gets really weird played through midi.

With the example patch “Sequencer DUO Test 02”, play any notes. Does never behave the same as with Local Control.
Sequencer DUO Test 02.syx.zip (444 Bytes)
Sequencer DUO Test 01.syx.zip (447 Bytes)

This problem still exists with Firmware 1.2.0.

BTW, it’s easier to hear what happens when you don’t use the Sub 37 keyboard at all:

e.g. using Ableton Live

  • Create MIDI channel
  • Set Channel MIDI From [], [All Channels]
  • Set Channel MIDI To [Moog Sub 37], []

Check global setup on Sub 37

  • Set Sub 37 LOCAL CONTROL KEYS [ON]
  • Set Sub 37 MIDI OUT MODE [KEYS]

Test procedure

  • Load the attached Preset “Sequencer DUO Test 01”
  • Deactivate OSC 1 on Sub 37
  • Play an interval (fifth, fourth, third) on Sub 37: You hear the note sequence for Pitch 2
  • Play an interval (fifth, fourth, third) on other keyboard: You hear the note sequence for Pitch 2
  • Set Sub 37 LOCAL CONTROL KEYS [OFF]
  • Play an interval (fifth, fourth, third) on other keyboard: You hear the actual played lower note repeated

Side note: If you mute OSC 2 instead of OSC 1, and do the same as above, you’ll always hear the proper note sequence for Pitch 1.

Hope this helps!

Thanks oli.

Will check this out soon,
