I like Moog Mariana a lot, I like the sound, I like the user interface and also the extensive midi control.
BUT: the CPU usage in my DAW (Ableton Live 12 in Windows 11) is extremely high. Compared to other VST plugins: I never ever get above 10% combining a lot of VST3 plugins. Mariana will play fine without any other plugins but when combining it, it’s almost unusable. CPU usage gets above 35% with spikes up to 70% leading to crackling of the sound.
I read a lot of complaints on the internet of this issue. Is this something I can fix with a setting or some ‘hidden’ performance tuning?
Are there any plans to improve this? In this state I can not use it in my projects which is a pitty…
same here… wonderful sound, interface … but I was suprised where the high cpu usage is coming from whe using it, found out its Moog Mariana (v1.2.0 and untouched preset)… and got to this this post - is there a fix or some ‘hidden’ performance tuning ?
I’m having the same issue with the iOS app. I downloaded it when it first came out and really liked it, but since it was updated to version 1.2 it’s been extremely choppy sounding. I tried all of the fixes recommended for this version, but nothing seems to work.
I can confirm I have the same issue, to the point where it is completely unusable.
My specs:
i9-14900HX with 96 GB of DDR5-5600 on a “gaming laptop” ASUS G634JZR-XS96
RME RayDat sound card (via Sonnet PCIe expension)
Using it on Linux via wine+yabdrige
I can run most plug-ins with 2.7ms latency (yes ) but for the Moog Mariana I need… 42ms (no typo) which obviously makes it completely unusable.
Fortunately I downloaded the trial version first to test it out.
If I had to guess I would say that they would have to completely rewrite the software to make this work. It must have to do with the way they structured the whole thing, and maybe they just hired developers that may not be the best on the planet.
If you think about a plugin like PianoTeq, it’s rather complex, probably much more than the kind of frequency generators you get in a Moog Mariana, yet it’s the smoothest thing at 2.7ms latency even with hundreds of voices playing at once. So to make a single voice unplayable under 42ms they must have messed up quite a lot
You’ve got great taste. Mariana is sonically incredible. But yes, in its current state,Geometry Dash it’s more of a sound design or bounce-to-audio tool than a live-performance synth unless you have a beast of a CPU. Until Moog updates it, careful use with freezes and optimizations is the way to go.
On iPad M1 / AUv3 hosted in Loopy Pro DAW. Half of the CPU hit seems to come from the UI instead of DSP. This cannot be so hard to fix. Maybe even software framerate limiter could be acceptable to start with.
