Hi~~I just bought the Ring Modulator. I was wondering what the expression pedal could do for the ring modulator. How can the 2 work together? I would appreciate any help.
Thanks

The expression pedal is basically like controlling one of the knobs with your foot. Any one of the knobs on the moogerfooger, with the exception of DRIVE, can be controlled by the expression pedal so you don’t have to twiddle the knobs with your hands while you’re playing.
ahh i see, thanks for the reply
BTW,
the absolute BEST expression pedal for the moogerfoogers is a modified ernie ball volume pedal (with the jacks on the front). I’m not exactly sure how to do it but a friend of mine has done this mod for me a couple of times and it really didn’t look all that complicated-took him about ten minutes. The Ernie ball’s smoothness beats just about any expression pedal out there! I use two for my MF-104Z and they’re awesome!
redeye,
Do you have any more info about how to do the mod? I have an ernie ball vp (jr?) and really like it, but it works better for volume than cv control. (I think this is because the volume pot is exponential when a linear pot is what is better for cv control.) It would be great to mod it so that the last 10% of the pedal didn’t control 90% of the cv…
I have had the new ernie ball volume pedals (not the jr versions) with the jacks in the front modded by my friend and they work really really well…sooo much better than the moog expression pedals. My friend actually has this mod with some pics listed in his blog on his website. You can acess it at: www.whitewizardelectronic.com it’s a pretty easy mod if you know what you’re doing with a soldering iron…I don’t really so I leave it up to the experts. Anyway, I don’t know if it works with the jr. but it certainly works well with the newer volume pedals with the jacks in the front. If you do the mod you have to get a stereo cable (one 1/4 inch jack to one 1/4 inch jack-NOT dual) and connect it to the out of the volume pedal and then it should work great. The volume pedal will also still work as a regualr volume pedal only it will work in reverse.
I just converted an old Dunlop bass wah I wasn’t using into an expression pedal. It was the kind of wah pedal with a spring built into it so it returns to it original position. Very expressive!
You can get a VP Jr modded for Moog from www.toneczareffects.com. Very nice expression pedals.
Expression pedals can also extend the range of many of the knobs/parameters you are controlling. ie- if you turn the lfo rate knob all the way clockwise then use the exp. pedal it will go faster than without the pedal! sweet.

that modded vp junior looks pretty great although you can really do it yourself for a whole lot less money and it’s really not that difficult at all
Another good option for the expression pedal is the BOSS FV-500H, with adjustable tension control to get it just right.
Sorry to drag up an old thread, but I just got my Low pass filter and was wondering about expression pedals.
First, If one got a stereo volume pedal, could you theoretically control 2 parameters at once with it? To those with experience with more than one expression pedal, is there any point to this whatsoever (ie moving 2 controls simultaneously)?
Second, Alien 8 suggested the BOSS FV500H. ANyone have any idea what the impedances on those are… I didn’t see it on boss’s site and am pretty sick of having customer support emails ignored. Could the 500L work, or ernie ball’s stero offering with a pot swap?
Finally, as I’d imagine that a selectable taper would be tricky for someone with minimal modification experience what taper do people prefer for expression pedals? Any links/etc (i know, I’m a noob and its not a tough mod) as the previously posted one is coming up dead for me?
Thanks for all the help so far. Your tolerance of my lack of knowledge is appreciated.
i don’t think you can control two params with the stereo vol pedal…the mod i know about only works with the mono vol pedal…pretty sure its one pedal=one parameter equation. one thing you could do is control multiple params with the control processor…might be more what you’re looking for
Actually, its one potentiometer = one parameter.
If the the stereo pedal uses a dual potentiometer and has two outputs (one for each pot) you would be able to control two parameters at the same time. I bet you could get some interesting sounds doing this.
thats’ true although you would need to figure out how to mod the stereo pedal to be an expression pedal…which might not be all that hard. probably be pretty cool too although you’d definately have more control with multiple exp pedals.
Thanks for all the replies. I was pretty sure that if there was 2 pots, it’d work for two parameters. In thinking about it, the mod would be simple, maybe to even replace the excess space that was opened with a polarity switch.
It probly sounds like too much wasted effort, but I’m not so sure about working a pair of pedals while standing and playing the bass as well as keep things sinple on the pedalboard. I just kind of like the idea of being able to say have the resonance increase as I drop the frequency/etc… Seems like lots of simple possibilities for a clumsy kid like me.
To those using ernie ball pedals, are the guts as simple as one would expect, and do the pot look like they’d be tough to swap out? Thanks to all that have and can help.
the pots on the ernie ball volume pedals look like they’d be pretty easy to swap out. The newer ones (model 6166) have little circuit boards and the older ones don’t. I don’t know if you can mod the older ones to work as cv pedals…probably can though. Mine are the newer 6166 version w/ the circuit board.
