Does any one know How he has setup his phatty on this video?
Looks good the way he can freeze the moog tracks and work on something else then go back an change it.
More than likely, his SP is simply attached to his computer with a single USB cable; and his keyboard is connected in the same way.
But if you are asking about how he uses ‘freeze’ in conjunction with When he says ‘freeze’ he’s talking about the Ableton function. It has nothing to do with the Slim Phatty and would apply to any sound source he’s got attached.
Basically what it does is ‘record’ or bounce the track by sending the recorded midi data to the synth (SP in this case) and record the audio onto an adjacent track. That way he can move on to the next track in his song.
In the old old old days, musicians using the first Moog Modulars did this with 4 track analog tape in order to a) get a monophonic analog synth to play chords and multiple parts; b) to create complex pieces while being played by a single musician and c) to get well more than 4 tracks (typically as many as 24 or 32) out of a 4 track physical tape deck.
I their case (Wendy Carlos for instance), you could record 3 tracks, then ‘bounce’ over to 4th track, thereby freeing 3 tracks again, this could continue for as many times as you wish to albeit with some degeneration of one as the analog tape was read from then written to again. As we all know, analog tape technology in those days was very very good and in many ways is actually better than digital recording.
One thing this guy doesn’t call out specifically is that he is also recording ‘automation’ which is sent from the SP’s cutoff frequency control for instance. This midi data is captured alongside the actual notes that were originally play.
Thanks but no it dose’nt help really, I know all about freezing tracks and using ableton live,
but when I have my slim setup with my audio track and midi track it dose not let me freeze the tracks with me setup or dose it let me have 2 tracks with the slim setup on for midi reasons
that’s why I asked about how he had it setup
You ought to email the bloke that made the video via YouTube. People are usually pretty good at responding especially if they are going through the trouble to demonstrate something for the sole purposes of posting it.
As for Slim with Ableton; that’s a pretty common setup; I cannot see that you have Slim setup improperly if it’s able to respond to/play Midi notes on/off from a Midi keyboard, recording the notes you are playing into ableton, and then playing back loops to Slim.
The only other possible scenario is recording tweaking of knobs from Phatty while Ableton is playing back notes and simultaneously recording the Midi CCs.
But I’m a Logic and a Maschine user so afraid I can’t give you any help other than you already seem to now. Sorry 'bout that.
Possible combinations of Midi settings within the Phatty line tend to revolve around:
channel in/out
program change yes/no
14 bit
midi cc
send midi clock/sync arp or lfo to clock
local control on/off
and then there is pot mapping which can get complicated !!
(not bothering to go into Poly modes; that’s an entirely different story!)
