CP 251 question...I'm confused

Maybe it’s because I was using the Carrier Out as my sound source…but tonight I was playing with the CP 251 I just got and following the manual’s instructions…everything worked as described except the attenuators.

Now, the manual is for the one with red washers and the attenuators go from 0-10. Mine is one with white rings and the attenuators go from -5 to 5. When I minimize the attenuator, the signal doesnt stop as described…it actually ramps back up…so the pitch variation actually INCREASES as I approach -5.

Is this normal…? It says when the attenuator is fully counter clockwise, there should be no pitch variation…but there is MORE. So basically, if I’m plugged into just the LFO and attenuator, I can’t even get a non fluctuating pitch…it’s alway going up and down, just less so when it’s set at noon (center).

Is this normal for the newer CP 251s?

yes this is normal. on the newer cp251s the attenuators are active which allows them to reverse the voltage fed into them (ie upward envelope attenuated to -5 becomes downward envelope) at the audio range i believe all this does is flip the waveform which doesnt really have much affect on the sound.

if you want to decrease the volume of the carrier out use the mixer section.

as far as the unstable pitch, do you have the amount knob for the ringmod lfo st to 0? otherwise i dont know what it could be

Thanks! Big help.
