I’m a new mooger and I recently got an MG-1. I love it and I’m getting pretty good at getting interesting sounds out of the little beast. I don’t know much about analog synths (other than the fact that I love them) and I was wondering what I can do with the Interface Ports (Pitch and Trigger). I want to know how to get the most out of my machine and the manual doesn’t really give much info on how to utilize these.
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated by this budding Moog enthusiast!
Those inputs are for control voltages, the signals that connect the various parts of analog synthesizers. If you do not have any moogerfoogers or other equiptment with cv outs, then you do not have a use for them yet. Welcome to the world of moog
Those are generally inputs that allow you to externally control the pitch and filter cutoff with something like an expression pedal. Im not familliar with that unit but some units also have similar voltage outputs.
Normally all of the circuits are controlled with the keyboard and the controls on the panel, but you can hook devices that output voltage control into those inputs and control them like that, giving you additional modulation possibillities.
For instance, a CP 251 would be a nice place to start if you were looking on expanding that. If you had another synthesizer like the Little Phatty, a Voyager or something like a MicroMoog, you could insert the keyboard and pitch outputs from one synthesizer, and slave your MG1 through those patchpoints on the back. Then when you held down 1 key, not only would you hear the Oscs on your first synth, but on your MG 1 as well.
Synthesis has a pretty steep learning curve, but once you get addicted to it (as I see that you have) it will be a lifelong journey.
Awesome. Thanks for all the tips. So if I were to get a Fooger like a Freqbox or something, how would the CV jacks give me more control over the stompbox?
Thanks a lot!
(The more info I get, the more I keep reading up to learn more about all this stuff).
they wouldn’t. those are CV/gate INPUT jacks…designed for something (like a sequencer or other keyboard) to take over pitch and gate functions of your concertmate.
a fooger CV out (LFO, VCO…?) plugged into your INPUT jacks might give you some interesting sound effects, but you might also fry something if the voltages are not compatible…do your research first before plugging a fooger in there.
The mg1 has become a new object of desire for me lately after watching AutomaticGainsay’s videos on you tube. About an hour worth of in depth exploration of that little monster. Definately worth watching if you haven’t already.http://www.youtube.com/automaticgainsay
Has anyone had success using a moog ep2 expression pedal with the mg1? I cant seem to get mine to work properly. I belive the voltage may be off…but could be wrong.
Fortunately, when I purchased my mg1 it came with some per-installed modifications. One of which is a “VCF CV IN” which I was hoping to use with my ep2. I wanted the ep2 to control the “cutoff freq” slider (vcf), which is what the new mod input is wired to. However, I am getting no results, even when I change the attenuation level on the pedal.
Ive also tried the ep2 in the pitch and trigger inputs. The pedal does decrease the pitch several octaves and the trigger input just turns on the “continuous” envelop.
Any similar stories out there? any feedback is appreciated.
thats pretty much what the pedal should do to the VCO and TRIGGER ins, not sure why its not working for the VCF. might not be grounded or might not be sending voltage to the EP-2
Hello , I recently purchases a Electro Harmonix 8 Step Analog Sequencer and plugging the cv out from the sequencer to my MG-1 doesn’t seem to do anything is there anything I should know about making these two guy talk?
The 8-Step CV should be able to provide the PITCH CV for the MG-1, but you’ll still need a trigger.
Try setting the “Contour” (Envelope generator) section controls for a continuous sound and see if that works…
Question concerning your MG-1 ~
Does yours have any mods done to it?
I own an original that I’m going to restore over the holidays, and been curious about some of the mods I have read about online.
I figure while the case is off and I’m “degunking” and replacing pots & switches, I might as well take care of some know useful mods…
