Change in pitch on Micromoog

My Micromoog, powers up, then the notes are all right in tune. Then I moved the mod wheel a bit, maybe change the destination to a filter from an osc. filter or something, then the notes all move by about a 4th or tritone. Because it seemed to happen when I moved the mod wheel I assumed there could be a loose solder joint or connection between the mod section and the rest of the synth. Is this a reasonable assumption? I realize it would be best to have it checked by a synth tech but the nearest synth tech is a 3 hour drive from here. I do have a tech nearby but he doesn’t like looking at old analog synths with difficult problems. If it might be something simple like a faulty connection or solder joint, though, I’m sure he could take care of it.. Any ideas? Anyone ever have a similar problem on their Micromoog? THanks!

Well all my micro might do is when you switch some of the white switches, it might make the pitch off by a half step or so. Sometimes when I change the modulation destination to Osc by filt then it might seem to change keys. Never had any other problems with the Mod wheel like you describe, and this is with 30 minutes + of warmup time on a day thats not overly humid or anything.

Hope you get it fixed, let us know what they came up with.

I was about to open her up and check the connections from the mod section again, when I powered it up it worked flawlessly again.. Nice that it worked, not nice that it could crop up again.. But really nice, I set it by the drums and started playing with some S/H droning..

This is a bit off topic…

As a young teen back in the early 70’s, I was privileged to work under the table for a guy who ran a music hall near to where I lived. One night John McLaughlin and the first Mahavishnu Orchestra played there. Among other duties, I helped unload the trucks, and helped set up the drum riser and PA stacks.

Once everything was set up, and before the “official” sound checks started, Jan Hammer recorded a short sequence on what appears now to have been a sequencer, and started playing it back on his synth (My memory is hazy as to what synth it might’ve been, though I recall that he actually played the sequence from a keyboard into a small module that was sitting on the keyboard’s case, and then played it back from that module. I really knew nothing about synths back then…). Anyway, he then got up from the synth, got up onto the drum riser, sat down at Billy Cobham’s drum kit, and started playing polyrhythms to the sequence he just recorded!

I stood there on the stage, in front of his synth setup, munching on a sandwich, absolutely amazed at what I was witnessing!

That was an amazing concert.

Oh yeah Jan can play drums very well. Witness Blue Wind on Jeff Beck Wired..
