Cant get LP stage II to sync w/ Ableton 7

I have followed the manual and all instructions with syncing the LFO and Arp with LIVE 7.. I have tried the USB over Midi way and the traditional Midi in/out to my MOTU Microlite midi box. I feel like there is something very simple that im not turning on or off in the master section. I can use the LP as a midi controller it just isnt recognizing the tempo changes in Ableton or syncing any tempo for that matter… Please help..

are you positive that Live is indeed sending MIDI sync? You go into options, midi/sync tab and be sure the SYNC box is ticked next to each MIDI output that you are trying to use… if you have any other hardware that can sync to MIDI, would be good to confirm that this other gear is working with the same MIDI signal (via the MOTU, it would have to be).
Anyway, if you are certain that you are indeed sending sync,
then you need to go to the LP master menu, MIDI Setup and make sure that MIDI input is set to “both” and then also on the master menu be sure that the LFO sync is set to MIDI… that should do it for the LFO. Remember that if you want to sync the arpeggiator to MIDI, that is saved per preset in the Advanced Preset->Arpeggiator menu (sync = MIDI). MIDI sync is global for the LFO.

Hope this helps,

Amos

First and foremost thanks for the reply Amos!

I had everything armed or highlighted corretly in ableton. Or so i think..lol. I want to be able to change the LFO sync rate to sync with ableton real time.. basically what i mean is that i want to tweak the LFO rate via the modualtion Knob & wheel (to do some nasty wobblly bass action) oposed to changing the value knob in the master settings changing the clock: value.

When I’m in the master settings and i change the LFO SYNC: to MIDI CLOCK it locks my Mod knob to whatever the LFO SYNC CLOCK: VALUE is i.e. 1/4, 1/8, 1/16 ect. ect.

I want to be able to tweak it via the Mod Knob/LFO rate but still being in sync w/ whatever tempo i have set in ableton.

When I have the LFO SYNC: set to INTERNAL i can do this.. But it wasnt always on time w/ ableton..

Just now i went back through just to make sure everything was kosher in the MASTER settings. I changed the LFO SYNC: to Internal and changed the LFO SYNC CLOCK: 1/32 giving me real time tweaking and it seems to be sync’d to my master tempo in ableton.

But, it doesnt change if i change the tempo in ableton automatically like if i had it(LFO SYNC:) set to MIDI CLOCK.

Im just kinda confused or making it more complicated then it is..

I want it(LFO SYNC RATE) to recoginize tempo changes automatically but i want to be able to adjust my RATE by the Mod knob.. not the value knob in the master settings..

I want it to recognize my changes and stay in “time” or sync whether i jump from 1/4 to 1/8 or to whatever but what if there is a tempo chnge in the song..

A 1/4 note is still a 1/4 note no matter the tempo but the LFO RATE would obviously have to speed up or slow automatically if there were a change in tempo in ableton.

Do i have to adjust the rate as the tempo changes keeping it to a 1/4 or shouldnt it automatically change the rate with the tempo. If it was sync’d w/ ableton??

keeping inmind that i have the LFO SYNC: set to internal so i can do crazy changes to the LFO RATE…via the Mod Knob not the value knob changing the clock value..

my head hurts.. lol..

thanks.. sorry this is so long.. lol.

2 things here:

If you set LFO sync to MIDI and LFO clock divisions to 1/4, then if the LP is getting good MIDI clocks from Ableton, you should be able to speed up or slow down Ableton’s master tempo and the LFO should still be doing 1/4 notes, following the tempo changes correctly. If this is not the case, there is a problem.

Second thing: Currently you can’t change the LFO rate using the normal LFO Rate (modulation) knob on the panel if the LFO sync is set to MIDI. This is because the LFO only gets one clock source; either the internal LFO rate is being used, which is what you are tweaking when LFO sync is set to Internal and you adjust LFO Rate via the panel… OR, the LFO clock source is incoming MIDI clocks, in which case you can adjust the internal LFO rate all you want and the LFO doesn’t care because it’s only listening to MIDI clocks. All you can change within the LP at this point is the clock divisions, because the clock base is coming from external MIDI, so it’s outside the LP’s control.

Now, what I would like to do that I think would solve your problem, is to fix it so that when LFO sync = MIDI, then when you select LFO Rate on the panel and turn the modulation knob, it actually sweeps through all the available LFO clock divisions, with whole notes at the counterclockwise side of the dial up to 32nd notes on the clockwise side.
That way you could freak the LFO rate from the control panel but it would still always be based on your MIDI tempo.

I am adding a note to the LP development spreadsheet right now with this request.

Cheers,

Amos

Sweet!

Exactly thats what i want.. to be able to tweak the LFO rate from the Mod knob when the master settings is set to midi clock.. that way We can ccontrol the LP’s LFO rate just as if it was set to Internal Clock oposed the “Locked” Midi clock setting. Changin all the note divisions..

So what happens next?

Moog comes up with downloadable updates to fix little bugs like this..

and do i get a cookie or a gold star for finding such things? lol..

just joking..

Amos your awesome! thanks for everything..
