Buying a Used Moog One 16-Voice Synth

Hello,

I’m in the process of purchasing a used Moog One 16-voice synthesizer in excellent condition. The unit was manufactured in early 2021 and sold by Sweetwater, so the unit is 5 years old but lightly used at home. I would like to know what I should be aware of before making this purchase? Any recommendations?

Thanks,

Omo

  1. It is analog but relies on many complex and tiny processors, adcs, dacs, and pcbs. Most of these parts are designed to be replaced and not serviced directly. (Compared to the through-hole design of say a Model D which can be directly serviced by a tech).
  2. Down the line the unit may not be easily repairable and spare parts may become difficult or expensive to source (buying a defunct unit to salvage parts). I did have my unit serviced by Moog in Dec 2025 and they were able to replace a voice card. I’m not sure how long Moog will be able to offer such a service as I believe the One is out of production now.
  3. Tuning between the voice cards can get wonky in lower registers, even after calibration. If you are able to test it out in person I highly recommend making sure its low end performance across voices is up to your expectations.
  4. The One is extremely heavy and bulky. Shipping it is going to cost >$400 one way.
  5. I have the 16 voice version. Because of the gain staging needed for 16 analog voices with 3 osc per voice, playing mono leads or bases can reveal a noise floor that is at times audible. The One really shines with complex polyphony. If you want it to do everything perfectly, you might be disappointed in its limitations. That said, it makes jaw-dropping pads.
  6. The One is not a simple synth with huge sweet spots like a Prophet. Programming it takes time, practice, patience, and deep knowledge of its behavior. I highly recommend buying preset packs to get started and reverse engineer them to learn from experts if you aren’t one (even if you are one). In particular I enjoy Luke Neptune and Matt Johnson’s presets for the One.
  7. Update to the latest firmware (1.8 iirc) if it doesn’t come with it. The engineers came back years after release to fix some important issues.

It is a unique and amazing synth. If you get it you’ll love it. It’s not perfect but it does deliver.
