Anyone interested in my Little Phatty?

I so want to love this thing but Im finding it hard to coax out anything really impressive or to my tastes. So if there is anyone wanting to give it a decent home then here it is.
It is an original stage one upgraded to stage two, and has black sides so looks sweet!!!

“never gigged”- there’s your issue! you’d love this wonderful machine if you gave it some live action!
haha- just razzing you- I’m sure it’ll find a home- great synth, to understate

I hope this synth finds a good home. I’ll admit I did set mine aside for a while when I bought an Old School, but it’s back in the line-up and has been played a lot lately. I find it’s a better bass synth than the Voyager.

I agree with you portamental. Way better at bass than the voyager..

I like it for leads. I use it mostly for leads. I let the Taurus do the bass. The LP is good for drum sounds because of the fast envs, but for bass drones, it’s Taurus III all the way.

Having had an Old School before, but although never a Little Phatty mind you, I was somewhat surprised by your comment. If anything, the Voyager is rather well endowed with low frequency component, especially with three oscillators instead of only two. Setting osc 1 and 2 slightly detuned along with osc 3 one octave lower makes for rather powerful, wall shaking bass patches IMO.

Note: if you’re wondering why I wrote that I had an Old School, meaning that I got rid of it, it was only to replace it with a Minimoog D.

Finding the perfect synth is pretty much like searching for the Holy Grail. You may walk many paths before finding the right one, and even then, you never quite get to the end of the road.

My favorite trick for tweaking more bass out of the OS is run OSC3 at 2’ or 1’ foot and switch to LO, and a mix of waveforms between 2 or 3 oscs. This way, you get Osc 3 one or two octave lower than the regular 32’ setting, pretty cool when you play a lead up the keyboard. Feels a little bit like the Gentle Giant sound, they play bass and guitar (or two guitars) in full sync all the time.

Anyway the three are so different. Best layout and control by far is the OS, but the more it goes, i find it a bit too juicy. LP’s sound is growing on me atm, terrific bang for the bucks. For that killer sound, the model D can not be touched, period. But a 40 years old synth is not without issues. I used to not want to use it too much, but I found out it ages even when not using it. I don’t turn it off much anymore.

I agree with you that the OS is a bit “juicy” as you put it.

What does “juicy” imply in the synth context?

There’s a video on You Tube comparing a Voyager and a D side by side. The author refers to the D as dirty and the Voyager as juicy. That’s where the term comes from. A couple of years ago, my untrained ears could not make all the difference, but now that I play both on a daily basis, I totally agree. Look it up, it shouldn’t be hard to find.
