the 119 looks great tho i prefer the layout of the 960, only problem is its just 8 steps, and I think ill need 3 sets of 16, much like the maq or the oberkorn mk3, i prefer the look of the oberkorn and the fact there isnt a digi display, the sam is perfect but 2k is just tooo much, think i might have to get saving the pennies

I love analog step sequencing and would love to see a new analog step sequencer from Moog, for instance as a Murf pedal/module. Anyhow this is what I use and is happy with:
- Numerolgy from Five12, a software step sequencer that can be operated as a plugin in Logic etc
This is what I would buy if I had space for it in my small apartment:
- Doepfer 16/3 (with blue leds - to match my Voyager Electric Blue ED), the classic hardware step sequencer.

just picked up an oberkorn mk3 on ebay for 300 quid, it pays to wake up early sometimes hehe
I have an Analogue Solutions Oberkorn mk3 with my Moog Minitaur…
Due to size I’ve been considering selli g the oberkorn. As I also have a octatrack, but the oberkorn is a very different sequencer… I’ve ha an offer to trade the oberkorn for a Darktime, which is an interesting option as its a better size for me, but it just does not seem like a fair trade exactly.

The Moon stuff is awesome (if you are a millionaire).
The Maq is awesome (but not really suited for live tweaking)
The 960 is awesome and the original; everything Tangerine Dream did was based on it… but you need to drop another $600 or more on all of the helper modules in order to just do 24 steps which the q119 does out of the box.
The q119 is awesome (value) but has zero gate on/off/skip capability so you’ll need a trigger sequencer also
DarkTime is awesome, especially for the from-to function if you only need 16 steps. Built in quantizer save $$ for sure. Doepfer makes good stuff; reasonable value and decent build quality.
Urzwerg Pro MK II is awesome because you can set all four rows of 8 in different direction/offset and from/to. Not the best build and people complain about the gates and Midi though it should be improved by now.
Endless options, possibilities, you name it. Just need money, time, and space. Most of us are limited by lack of money, lack of time, lack of space. Just buy what looks good to you for now; by used if you can that way you can dump it later and not lose too much coin.
They all have their strong points and I didn’t mention Oberkorn, but very nice also, sort of a hybrid with some very unusual funky modes not seen elsewhere.
Pedal? Get the EHX 8-Step and hack it (I’m about to and will publish my findings or alternatively, publish the fact that I blew it up and got a nice smoke show for my $125)
I’m a total nubcake when it comes to sequencers, but I really want to get one. To be honest I’m a newborn with all things CV, v/oct or hz/v etc. I really don’t understand when people use the term “gate” and “steps” (I’m guessing that means note?) Like how do you even set-up the sequencer? Play a note and press record on the sequencer, rinse and repeat for all 8 or 16 steps? I basically just want to sequence a bass line or melody, let it play on and then tweak it while I play another synth…
Primarily for my Voyager. Was contempating the Dark Time, but for $300 more I could score a Moon Modular 658. Anyone care to expound on if one is better than the other?
CV and Gate, v/oct? hz/V? wha?? 
Don’t hate, but I really don’t know jack crapple nor use MIDI whatsoever. I simply record on synth at a time ala multitrack and make songs, call me what you will.
The Moon will require a case, power supply and wiring harness. The Dark Time will require some patch cords. You set the control voltage (that corespond to the note you want played) with each pot or slider per step. The gate is what triggers your envelopes. Same as pressing a key on the keyboard.
I highly recommend the pure analogue step sequencer A-155 from Doepfer, especially in combination with a sequential switch (A-151) to switch between the two sequencer rows. Of course, it is a not a stand-alone version, but a part of Doepfer’s modular system. Doepfer’s Dark Time is the stand-alone unit developed from the A-155.
Another great step sequencer I can recommend is Manikin’s Schrittmacher, although it is a pure digital MIDI machine. But its behaviour is like an analogue step sequencer.
Other than the iOS apps we’ve already discussed in the forum, i have enjoyed using Yamaha’s Tenori-On as a step sequencer http://www.global.yamaha.com/tenori-on/ - it has transpose and lots of other great functions across 16 channels, as well as being a synth and sample player… since nobody appears to have talked about it I figured I would mention it.

Revolution over the Orb. DIN & MIDI along with CV/Gate. And a 303 emulation to boot.
I’m using Octatrack both as a sequencer and as a sampler
