Amp?

I ordered a Moog Little Phatty Stage II, which will be here soon (:D), and I was wondering what the best way of amplifying it would be? I have several different guitar amps, one of which I was planning to use. Would this work, or do I specifically need a keyboard amp?

Hi-
Welcome. I have a Peavey KB100, with a 15" woofer, and a piezo tweeter. It has 3 imputs, reverb (a must), and simple EQ. I have had it for a long time, and it works good for in-home work. I don’t gig…

I have tried it with a tube 120watt, Peavey twin, and I prefer the KB 100.
It’s up to your ears, but try a keyboard amp if you can !
-best-

guitar amps tend to have a heavy midrange emphasis…keyboard amps are more full-range. what amps do you have? some may be better suited for a keyboard than others…

I have a Peavey Bandit 112, a Peavey Envoy 110, a Peavey Rage 158, a Line 6 Spider III (1x12), and a Marshall JCM 2000 TSL (Triple Super Lead) with a 1960 Lead 4x12 cabinet. I was hoping to use the Peavey Envoy 110 until I can save up enough money to buy a keyboard amp.

you can use any of them…they probably won’t sound as good with your moog compared to a full-range keyboard amp. try each of them…see what sounds best. try lowering the midrange controls to dial out some of the mid-heaviness of the guitar-voiced speakers.

Be careful of the bass frequencies! Don’t blow up your amp!

Yes…I suggest a Peavey KB3 or a used KB/A 60 or 100 if you can find one. Peavey makes awesome amps, as you already know.

Yeah, I love Peavey’s, although my Marshall is my favorite overall. The only problem with the Marshall is that I can’t move it!

Nothing against Marshall as a guitar amp, but you’ll fry that puppy trying to play the Taurus patches or Lambsbread. Try this link: http://www.samash.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_KB3%201x12%20Keyboard%20Amplifier_-1_10052_10002_-49975731_cmCategorySA182897

one more vote for peavy kb 100. I own a roland kc500 as well and I like the peavy so much more. It has reverb and bigger punch. Im not much a fan when it comes to peavy guitar amps but for keyboards its the way to go. You could probably pick one up for $100, that’s a dollar a watt!

I picked up my KB/A 60 for 59 bucks after tax! That’s LESS than a dollar a watt! And I rarely take it over 3 on the volume…it’s just LOUD! It also starts distorting because of the coaxial speaker I want to replace. :smiling_imp:

I will always swear by any one of the Roland KC series keyboard amps. For small amps they pack a punch and the big amps pack a whopper.

You will be very suprised to see what kind of power these babies will dish out.

Eric

So it looks like for around $250-$300, I can get a Peavey KB 3, KB 2, or a Roland KC-60. Which would you recommend?

For the time being, I think I’ll just use headphones with the LP until I can save up some $$.

Im telling you that what you should do is really try them out.
You won’t be unimpressed with the performance of the Roland i promise.

I have seen some of those amps take a sonic pummeling and still stand up. Think about it.

Eric

Im referring to the Kc150. I woudln’t settle for less than that. UPwards definately.

E

I’d go with the KB3. a ten inch speaker will drop some of the lower frequencies, and an eight inch driver is useless. I had an Alesis Sumo 15 that was crap. At least get a 12 in whatever amp you choose.

Congrats on the LP. While you could use the guitar amp in the mean time, and be careful what you feed it I think buying a keyboard amp would allow you to take full advantage of the LP’s sound. Though we did have a keyboardist in JazzBand in the late 70’s who ran his Model D through a Fender Twin Reverb

While the lower cost ones( like the KB1) can work and work fine as a practice amp or small performance amp, t I think they are too under powered for synths like the LP plus won’t allow you to use the LP to it’s fullest advantage. I would spend a bit more and go for something like a KB3 or Roland KC100 minimum. There are of course other choices out there but Roland and Peavey are the most popular. The older “lower cost” Peavey’s and the Roland KC’s tend to be a bit hyped in the mid range but can usually be tamed with the built in “tone” controls.
As it has been said, if you can go out and try different amps you can chose which works and sounds best to you. Nothing wrong though with asking what other people like, that’s good research  .

Over the summer a group of us got together for a synth jam. Since it was a small space and a lot of volume was not needed and walls didn’t have to be moved I took an older Roland KC100 ( Now kind of a KC150 I think) along with a Voyager and Prophet 08. Worked fine, there was more than enough power for the area and just enough range for the bass patches . While the KC has multiple inputs sent the synth into a Mackie 1202 which then feed the KC100. The reason for this was it allowed me to place one MoogerFooger in effects send 1 and another in effects send 2. I could then chose which synth went to or not to a MoogerFooger…or two.

In the studio most the time use a Peavey (22 years old) KB300,( didn’t take it to the jam since for that it would have been over kill) It has worked flawlessly since day one. Now it lives in the studio all the time, but it has been moved once and done one other outside jam years ago. Other times I’ll play through the studio monitors.

Have fun that is the main thing, we all have our own way of doing things what works best for me might not for you or could be a jumping off point to go in your own direction, the main thing is enjoy yourself.

Fender Twin Reverbs…those used to be Rhodes Amps right? Well I know that is definately a classic amp choise that is preferred a lot for RHodes Players.

Eric

It was used for a Rhodes yes, I think several guitar players also used one

Thanks for the responses guys.
I’ll definitely try and get out to try some different amps, and I’ll look for something with a 12" speaker or larger. I just want to make sure that I’ll have a good quality amp that will allow me to use the full-range of the LP’s capabilities.

I got the Peavey KB2. Ive only had it a month. Works great so far and light too.
