Advice Needed

Hello all,

I am new to moog equipment, and have just recently acquired a ring modulator and a freq box.

There is an ungodly amount of outputs and inputs on the back of each as you know, what are some possible ways to hook these two up? My main instrument is guitar, although I do own a small Korg vocoder. The music is mainly instrumental shoegaze with very driving distorted riffs.

I’d appreciate anyone’s input, and please forgive me, I’m embarrassed to make this post.

Welcome to the world of Moog.

If you want to connect them try sending the envelope out from the 107 to the frequency in of the 102 (make sure the drive on the 107 is up enough to catch the dynamics of your playing but not so low as to flatten them - red light sometimes). This way the louder you play the higher your ring mod tone. Or if you have the ring mod frequency set pretty low you’ll get a really strange modulated tremolo. Very cool.

Or connect the 107’s ENV out to the 102’s mix in: the louder you play the more ring mod you get. Note that the 107 doesn’t even have to be engaged to do this.

Or connect the LFO from the 102 to the waveform in on the 107. make it a slow LFO, and it will gradually sweep as you play, no pedal required. Same thing if you connect it to the FREQ in on the 107, a very nice effect.

You’ll get the idea pretty quick.

Good luck.

Oh yeah, another nice trick that I like is to engage full mix, highly modulated tremolo sparsely. Say you’re letting a note ring out and you turn the ring mod on and off as it fades away, very nice. Sounds like the sound is completely falling apart and coming together again.

You could also have the envelope out on the freq to the LFO input.
LFO output to the SYNC input.

This way, the louder you play the more the LFO modulates the sync.

Heres my advice, learn as much as you can about the circuitry inside the pedals
Envelope Follower
VCO
Dual Waveform LFO
Ring Mod Carrier Oscillator.

and then you will want to experiment with different things. Were always ready to give you a possible suggestion, but if we did that, it would spoil your discovery process.

If you can, try to get a cp251. This will give you a lot more options with just those limited ins/outs. It will also allow for BOTH to be used as Oscillators that will track a Voltage controlled SYnth.

Have fun with that!

Eric

hahaha..

Thank you all for your advice. I will look into it deeper. You have me intrigued with the ‘discovery’ process. Most things requiring that work out well for me..

While I really don’t have an answer for you, I did want to tell you that I like your user name! That is one of my all time favorite songs, both for the drum work, and for the lyrics! Just an excellent song all around.

Welcome to the forum!

ohhh man you are in for a treat once you get familiar with those pedals. i own a the ringmod, no freq yet, but i have the lowpass and phaser. and the ring mod makes the best tremolo ever, specially for shoegaze! my favorite setting is:

Amount-7 mix-4
sine wave low
rate-0.8 freq- 0.6(all the way down)

then take the envelope out(from freq) and plug it into the freq in (on ring mod) a little fuzz before the pedals and kinda sounds like one of those fireworks that spins around on the ground. now if you place the freqbox before the ring you will get a smoother envelope response if you place it after the ring mod you will get a more stuttered envelope. play around with the drive controls too, moogers make great distortion pedals, the more you get the better it gets. VERY LOUD distortion, but your in a shoegaze band so thats a good thing i presume. enjoy

From what I’ve heard of the pedals so far I am impressed. Thank you all for your comments and welcoming attitude.

mayidunk, I’m glad you noticed my username, it is a good song..even better band!

Hey,
Just in case you are interested,
I recently shot some demonstration videos of the Freqbox and the Ring Mod on the electric piano. If you want, check them out here:

hey..thanks a lot, I’ll check it out.
