Adding gain to the 914

I’m having a great time with my model 10. I love the sound of the 914 but the fact that it’s passive and there is a big loss of signal when it’s patched in is a shame. Has anyone added an amplifier to its back end to allow some level balancing?

I did. I developed a generic amplification cascade as a module for my model 55. Each stage does an amplification of factor 10. The stages can be cascaded, so you get factor 10 100 1000 etc. to enance very weak signals if you need to. It works fine for my 914 and all other sources.

It is DC coupled, so you can enhance control voltages as well.

That looks brilliant! I’m thinking of embedding the amp inside the 914 module as I’m not able to add more modules to my model 10. So I’ll have to tap off the available power.

I have to say that I’m really enjoying the model 10 and a second cabinet of synth-werk or Mos-lab may be in my future in which case this module might fit.

Yes, I know Gerhard Mayrhofer (Founder of Synth-Werk). When he started business he asked me how to clone a 901 VCO.

AFAIK the new Model 10 reissue still operates with +12V -6V power supply. So a board added amplifier circuit would have to be adapted if opamps are used like in my TAMP solution.

Another possibility is to add a Moog style transistor based amplifier stage. There are several comparable standard circuits in the modules.
