hey can someone give me some tips on what effects you use on your voyager sequences so it fits good in a mix with your basic digital keyboards? like maybe some reverb or delay ?
Besides “sound shaping” effects like filters and whatnot I normally use a little delay on the Voyager (tempo-synced more or less) and then apply an overall reverb to the mix during mastering.
If you listen to the tune “Blip Fool” at http://virb.com/blipfool/ you can hear an example. Starting around 2:40 the Voyager is used for two different “high pitched” lead sounds. It’s also in various other places in the mix but mostly for subtle effect at low volume.
The Voyager is also used in the other tunes there as well but to be honest I don’t always remember exactly where! ![]()
Most often I try to edit the sound of the digital synths here to match the analogue Voyager sound better ![]()
It may be worth trying out some guitar stomp boxes too.
I use a Ibanez Tubescreamer for those guitar solo sounds. A Roland SD-1 is an excellent choice too as its about a third of the price of the Ibanez pedal.
A nice phaser, the Electroharmonix Smallstone is perfect and has a really slow sweep for adding animation to an otherwise sterile sequence.
A chorus pedal is not bad too, but this is sometimes handier in the digital domain.
An analogue flanger is great too. Not as subtle as a phaser, but it can also act as a simple chorus unit too. I have yet to hear a digital flanger as good as the Boss BF-1.
