I remember when this came out. I was pretty excited that a Minimoog was being made again, eventhough it wasn’t a genuine Moog. I then read some not so favorable reviews and in a short time the whole thing just vanished.
Anyone actually seen/heard one in person? Did it sound/feel like a Minimoog, or was it just a big fat FAIL in comparison? Just curious.
Are you referring to the Mini that was made in Wales?
I think very few were actually made, and AFAIR, Bob Moog legally regained the Moog Music name soon after.
One of the VSE mods owns one of those Welsh Minis–you might check with him.
I don’t think any of them ever made it to the states because the Moog trademark in the US was under ownership by “CincyMoog” Don Martin before Bob got the trademark back.
The UK Moog made all sorts of promises to reissue classic Moogs like Taurus pedals and modulars. I have at least two magazines with reviews on the UK Minimoog (aka Welsh Minimoog) then they stopped making any moogs altogether.
The trademark conflict in US may have hindered its success, not to mention being totally unprepared for synth manufacture which is a huge undertaking.
Interesting stuff. I figured that only few were produced. I did not know about the legal stuff. At the time, I figured that the company licensed/purchased the name from the owner.
Hi,
mine is in perfect shape and still works great. I own two “real” Minimoogs and we put a third one next to it, to compare the sound. “We” are T. Wolf (who made the soundset for the Voyager) and me. We didn´t notice a big difference. The look of the instrument is slightly different, because of the switches, that are more ARP Pro Soloist like, than Moog. And it´s got PWM and Midi. Why they didn´t put Sync in, is something I don´t understand.
As far as I remember, Sound-on-Sound had a quite extensive review of this machine in the late 90s.
