I’d like to be able to use my ring mod as a tracking device on my guitar. Can you use the OSC out on the 107 to the carrier in on the 102 to accomplish this?
Thanks,
Bryan

I just spent about 15 minutes trying it, and the results weren’t too promising. The patch does open up some new kinds of hissy/buzzy breakup sounds, if that’s what you’re after, but I couldn’t get it to do anything that sounded like smooth tracking, and for the most part the dominant sound was FreqBox rather than Ring Mod (i.e., the tonal quality of the FB oscillator tended to dominate the whole sound no matter what I did). Definitely try before you buy if that would be the main application you have in mind.
yeah basically all your doing is replacing the internal VCO with a more expressive and controlable VCO. its still going to output the sum and difference of the 2 sources
Considering you need a simple tone to do this, and syncing causes a more complex sound, you will be able to sync a ring mod effect, but it wouldn’t be as clean sounding as the ring mod itself.
Since the FB would be syncing to your note you will need to split the guitar signal, and add a pitch shifter to create a different pitch for the FB to track… Then the pitch that you have the pitch shifter set to would be your ring mod frequency.
I think trying to keep the sounds as ‘harmonicless’’ as possible is the way to go. Roll the tone control off on the guitar, have the Freqbox generate a sine/triangle wave, keep the mix on the Freqbox dry. Then the Ring Mod would have smooth signals to work with for both the carrier and audio signals.
I have to admit that I have a hard time justifying buying a Freqbox. Using it with the 102 seemed like a potential excuse (there really aren’t many tracking ring mods out there), but it sounds like it might not work very well.

Man I almost regretted buying the 107 when i opened the box because it was an impulse decision.
I will say though that it often reminds me by vlowing my mind how happy I am with it.
I almost like its sound better than a Voyager Osc.
It does a lot of stuff and while it might not seem like the thing to get, it will impres you.
For example, when processing it through the rhodes, each note on the rhodes has a different texture due to the tracking effect. It will ripple at various tempos just by changing a key, and the volume of the note depressed together will add effect. With the theremin I have most definately gotten ring modulation from the Freq.
With the Voyager touchpad gate, I could manually sample and hold the freq with the cp251. I think its one of the best sounding oscs in my setup and I woudn’t trade it for the world.
ALl this coming from someone who almost regretted buying it.
It will amaze you again and again.
COnsider it.

So I tried the whole pitch shifter freq box thing and it works, but so does just using the pitch shifter, which doesn’t specifically justify buying the freq box in my opinion. The true ring mod sounds great, but I was getting some neat textures…
From what I heard of the “tracking ring-mod” set-up it seems to have little point - especially if you play guitar. You always end up playing a chord of some type… It would be cool for those of you with little phatty’s.
Aside from this set-up the freq-box is awesome, if you’re into glitchy unpredictable guitar synth swells. There are lots of things that it does all on its own without the need for any of the other foogers. I’m still getting used to it and trying to figure out how to tame some of the sounds, but I’ll get there in time…
