Now no one's avatar shows up. Has this been switched off at the system level? Was this change made recently?

I didn't get the memo.

Yeah, Tom Oberheim's SEM (Synthesizer Expander Module) was a pretty cool idea. They were originally sold as an add-on to the MiniMoog and Arp 2600.

That's exactly what I wanted to do with my Mini and SEM -- to be able to drive 5 oscillators at once and/or have sounds with two sets of loudness ...

Wouldn't that be Studio Electronics, not JLCooper?

Aye, it is. I found their web site and sure enough, their history page cites the Midimoog and P-Five rackmount synths.

Getting back to unusual Moogs.....Patrick Moraz had a double Minimoog -- two sets of Minimoog electronics in one box, and the ...

Moog is at it again. With the Rack mount version of the Voyager.

Well it's about bleepin' time!

If not Moog, then companies like JLCooper would have been more than happy to make rackmount versions or conversions, like they've done with Minis or Prophets in the past. The down side was that you'd ...

Good news indeed. Thank you, Hieronymous!

If they are doing it season by season, COOL. I several, if not all, of " The Best of The Muppet Show" DVD's, which has three episodes per disc.

Last I checked Amazon had most of them, I purchased mine from Best Buy.

When I checked online for ...

Also UK rockers Marillion had some pretty cool Moog solos on their early stuff. Sounds a bit dated now, though...

I think the keyboardist was/is named Mark Kelly. Some of my favorite Marillion synth solos were on Grendel, Garden Party, She Chameleon, and Fugazi. I really haven't followed the band ...

Before I got into synths, I played organ. Many of the home organs had a one-octave pedalboard. A few of the Allen church organs I played or saw had pedalboards that spanned at least two octaves.

I'd love to have a full AGO (American Guild of Organists) pedalboard with a MIDI interface and several ...

Re: Moogs on TV

The next time you're up watching David Letterman, wait til the camera is on Paul Schaffer. Behind him (TV left, Paul's right) in all it's beauty and glory is a Minimoog Voyager AE...

Yup. Saw it. But I'd wish they'd show him playing it.

Aside to Hieronymous: The Muppet Show episode with Harry ...

I think it was Gary Wright who used a split Minimoog so that he could walk around with the keyboard only. Many of his solos sounds like horn parts. (Example: "Are You Weepin'".) It kind of predates the Liberation and other portable synths that were to come a few years later.

I concur with those who say the Mini has the best user interface. The signal follows a logical path from the keyboard to the performance modifiers (e.g. the wheels, glide, decay) to the oscillators to the mixer to the filter envelope to the volume envelope to output.

Plus it had such great sounds ...

My favorite synth players/performers/bands that used Moogs, in no particular order:

- Wendy Carlos (Switched-On Bach was my formal intro to synths)
- ELP
- ELO
- Gary Wright ("Dream Weaver" still rocks my world)
- Devo
- Saga
- Gary Numan
- Kansas
- Asia (Remember Geoff Downes' altar of 15 ...

Moogs in the darndest places

This weekend, I borrowed a copy of the Best of the Muppet Show DVD -- the one that featured the episodes of Elton John, Julie Andrews, and Gene Kelly. During the Elton John episode, while he was singing "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" and playing with other Muppets, Dr. Teeth (leader of the in-house ...

.....So I chopped up some legs from Speakeasyvintage.com (Rhodes legs are same threading), stuck a plate of tempered glass on top of it, and made the Polymoog a classy looking coffee table. Looks great and it is a conversation piece 8)

I can see doing that with a Poly that's gone all crufty. Or ...

...and cleaning dirty pots too!

Ooh, ick! I take it the keys themselves have been cleaned off, but not the spring contacts.

I have a few keys on mine that need new springs, and one key contact needs a good cleaning. When I hit the key, it rises in pitch above the key, and then falls back down, as if I'm hitting the pitch ...
