The MM has an gain knob so you can set it so it sounds just right when you engage...no volume loss. You can also get some compression/overdrive by cranking up on this.

There are no rules but *generally* you want to record bass mono. There are way too many reasons why so I'm not going to go into technical...but mis-recorded/mixed bass/kickdrum can muddy up your mix fast. Mono is the safe move unless you really know what you're doing and feel you need to mess with ...
