I'd guess you need to turn down the "VCO Mod Amount" knob. Sounds like it's set to modulate Frequency on the right side and EG on the left. That would give you the traditional kick drum/laser sound.

I would try a calibration. I don't see any way to get the result you are normally.

MIDI sync generally works fairly well, and is what I use the majority of the time.
