Problems with VST editor in ableton

I have read Amos's explanation of how to get around this which involves 2 midi tracks but i'm sure the creaters of the software did not intend it to be used like that?? am i wrong?
I think the editor was designed toi be used on one channel.
My situation with one channel and an audio of course so i can hear it is this:
i can control the editor with the LP but cant control the LP with the editor! which means it is not sending midi back to the LP! There is also a midi plugin native to ableton called external instrument and that works fine but it lacks the ability to tweek parameters like the VST is supposed to do.
I'm also at a loss as to where to put the .fxb presets that came with the LP VST editor, i have put them in the same folder as the VST component BUT it doesnt seem to register on the VST it just says blank preset 1-100.
I'm really disapointed with this VST editor it simply doesnt do what it said it would do easily.
Can anyone share with me their experiences or give me some feedback?
