I know this has the potential to be an ugly thread....so Im not trying to say which is better. Let me clarify..


Since I bought my Voyager, I have ben trying to reproduce some of those Model D juicy bassines that is heard on the Automatic Gainsay youtube video emonstration of the Model D. I am hearing insane analogue bass from the D that has a quality that I just can't seem to match with the Voyager.

The Taurus, however comes extremely close to the insane filthy bass that the D effortlessly pumps out. Around 2:48 or so http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WY2AeD0Tn4Y

Im not trying to get a comparison, Im just saying that the Taurus delivers that raspy bass that gets close to that D sound that the Voyager just won't go to. The voyager is just butter smoothe, the Taurus has razors on that sawtooth wave.

My T-3, MIDI'd to my Phatty, produces some of the most brutal & aggressive bass tones I've ever heard. I agree with your Mini vs. Voyager comparison - both are great sounding machines, but there are differences between them, with the Voyager being the smoother-sounding of the two. I sold my Voyager a few years ago because (at the time) it was not quite aggressive enough for me, and now that I have my Taurus and Phatty, I am wishing I still had the Voyager. My Phatty does certain sounds very well, (sync leads, & overdriven basses & leads), but there is not nearly enough modulation to keep things interesting for very long - especially after playing my Prophet '08, with it's 4 LFOs and plethora of mod routing options. I guess the point I'm trying to make is that each synth has its own unique voice, and you should never sell one to buy another - just save & collect them all, even if it takes years. I've owned & sold way too many cool musical instruments, so now I have gotten very picky about which ones I buy, knowing that whatever I buy, it's going to be with me for a looong time..

There have been times when I say do I need both the Voyager ahd the Model D?

As close as they are, the model D has a certain edge with the filter wide open that is missing on the Voyager. But Voyager can get many sounds not possible on the model D.

And then I stop asking myself these questions.

But neither can get the subsonics of the T3 though.

So the Model D has been reissued. Everyone says the Minitaur wins in a bass fight when it comes to the Sub 37 and Voyager. I would love to know a result between the Minitaur the Model D in a bass battle.

Well, I disagree about the quality of the comparison.

Mainly because one gets zero information about what is happening when, and because the sound quality is not the best. Anyway, for me it is a "war" of little interest, as the D, unfortunately, is way beyond my budget. So I'll have to do with the Minitaur

Gotcha! It was the only comparison I could find, that's all. It's price tag is hefty. It's beyond my budget too (slightly off topic here) but I am not so sure I would get it ahead of the Sub 37 anyway. I liked what somebody said about the Sub 37 and the D comparison "the D is for synth fetishists."

the voyager ( with slew rate mod, as that's the only one i can compare) has a bit more the characteristics ( soundwise) of the multimoog
the t3 indeed is more raw/ powerful in mij opinion and therefor comes closer to the model-d . ( minitaur and sub37, all seem to be based on the t3 rather then on the voyager, which i think was a good idea
t3 afcourse without the note range of the model-d, it's bass

to be honest the synth most used is the voyager , as it's handy, reliable and doing its best sufficiently, it's my workinghorse.
mostly coupled with the t3 underneath it
the model-d ( and other types ) are my "fun to play synths", i would feel uncomfortable b.e. to take them to gigs or synth gatherings as they are too precious to me and irreplacable.

so my advice: buy all three of them

ps , haven't tried the new model-d as i'm a long time user of a beloved model-d (serial 2***, very well kept and calibrated) already. would love to compare with the new ones but they still are not very widespread over here
