can somebody tell me what the hell sound on sound is on the roland re-501/sre-555?

I have the 555. Sound-on-sound will turn off the erase head, meaning as the loop comes back around, you will hear what you played in its entirety. Of course we're talking lo-fi tape here, but it's basically a looping device which is fixed in loop/time length by the length of the tape. Which is difficult as you must fix the length of your phrase to the tape and not the other way around. You can get some interesting phrases which go "out of sync" with each other if you don't worry about it though. :)

I'm pretty sure Sound on Sound's editors are pretty keen on the old Roland tape echo units ;)

Actually it's more to do with Bill Nelson's album of the same name (as Red Noise).
