are there any concerns i should have about having my voyager is a smokey environment? other than the funky smell?

Nicotine starts to form as a sticky film on surfaces over time. Once it does, it is very difficult to clean off! Nasty stuff!

well it will be unavoidable since i will be jamming with smokers and playing in bars. i suppose the best i can do is keep her clean and in her case when i am not playing.

I wouldn't be too worried as long as it isn't stored in a smokey environment. If it's in a club for a few hours and then back in a case, it should be fine, as long as you check it out to make sure there is no visible damage (i.e. mold on the wood). If you played it in bars/clubs, I would be much more worried about someone setting a beer in the back of it, or any liquids in a 15 foot radius.

+1, the real danger in bars is booze on your gear. Smoke won't really be an issue unless you're storing it in a smokey area, in which case you will eventually have gross sticky keys, scratchy pots, and potentially real harm done to the internal components over longer periods of time. One good PBR on the other hand will probably smite the Voyager on the spot.

There is no such thing as a good PBR.


I personally don't want to take my voyager to a smoke studio. I can't understand the mentality behind someone who smokes in their studio because you spend all this money on gear and then subject it to conditions ultimately less than ideal. (Cat Hairs included)

People who own mixers are especially subject to this since sliders are notorious for sucking things into those spaces.


If I had the money, I would buy a sampling synth or something like a scratch and dent analog modeling synth for the purposes of gigging and leave the Voyager in the studio.

I originally thought about getting a Phatty for just such purposes, but if I had the Phatty I would probably still not want to take it anywhere.

Nice looking kit, and I love Pearl hardware! They do it right, IMO. However, I'm assuming that you're referring to the drum riser. Will it give his Voyager more punch?

Smoking has been banned in bars in Ontario - and most of Canada I think - for almost ten years. I can't tell you what a huge difference this makes in so many ways, from health to gear.

Last week I went to a Big Boy in Detroit with a friend, and, even though we sat in the non-smoking section, it was a huge surprise to me. I had forgotten what it was like to smell cigarettes indoors.

They're going to be introducing non-smoking legislation in Michigan soon. I hope more states catch on, cause it really makes a difference in your health, and your equipment.
