Voyager Sighting

FYI: Paul Shaffer, keyboardist and MD for the CBS Orchestra on the Late Show with Dave Letterman, has added an AE Voyager to his setup. The Voyager sits directly behind Paul and slightly to the left and can easily be identified when the camera is on him. It's been there for about a week now, but I haven't heard/seen him play it yet.

Cool to see a Moog on TV!

That guy has a lot of nice keyboards and a pretty cool setup but he plays for the CBS orchestra....kind of lame.

The title 'Orchestra" is a misnomer. They used to be known as 'The World's Most Dangerous Band'. Original band members include bassist Will Lee, drummer Anton Fig, and guitarist Sid McGinnis, all of whom are "first call' session men and highly respected musicians in their own right. Same goes for Felicia Collins (guitar) and the guys in the horn section (trumpet, 'bones and sax), all of whom where added when Letterman made the move to CBS back in '93.

In addition to leading the Late Show band, Paul Shaffer's resume includes five years manning the keys for the band on Saturday Night Live, MD/producer for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremonies, leading the band for the "We Are the World" finale of Live-Aid, and serving as MD of the closing concert at the '96 Olympic Games and several SuperBowl half time shows. He's done some other music projects, and has been in a few movies, too.

Yea, he's also a little nutty, but guy's got the chops where it counts. And now he's added a Voyager to his arsonal. Very cool!

Band vs. Orchestra

FYI, as I understand it, the difference between a band and an orchestra is simply that an orchestra has strings (violins, violas, cellos, basses) while a band does not.

In that case, term Orchestra really doesn't apply for this group. I've always found the "CBS Orchestra" moniker a little strange anyway. When I hear the term 'Orchestra' I usually think of a symphony orchestra, with strings, horns, reeds and percussion, not a rock band.

That Voyager came from a shop at which I've worked. It was the display model - one whose patches I had modified to (in my opinion) show off the Voyager's unique expressiveness.

Dammit, Paul is playing with some of my presets!
