okay im literally begging you guys for help here.

I know not many - if any of you, has or uses ableton 8. However, this is really confusing me.

This is what i want to do:

Use my LP as a masterkeyboard for all my softsynths ( ie. no other external keyboards ) - and ofcourse use it for itself, once i select its track.

I want to be able to record midi from the LP to ableton, and i need to be able to send the recorded midi from ableton, including reso/cutoff, etc changes i do, back to the LP so it plays back with my "tweaks" on it.

Thats it.

Heres what it does now:

I can select a sound, it works - only if its a bass. If i select a string, or any other type sound it either jumps around as if it has an arp on it (but not an arp.. kinda ) - or it dies down quickly and becomes garbled. I have managed to get to work earlier, but i have NO clue how. And that suddenly stopped working again when i played back a track i had made with a softsynth ( copied its midi notes, no CC changes btw ) - it became garbled, and basically made the sound i had on the LP change and become useless.

Now- i can do local control ON, and then it will work perfectly. I can also this way record audio from it - and that works perfectly also. No fluttering, no garble, no nothings, just what its supposed to do - so im pretty sure some crap midi is being sent, but i have NO clue on:

1) how to set this up properly in ableton 8
2) what to enable and leave disabled on the LP in terms of midi - should it send and receive sysex? Should it have both midi in/out enabled? what about midi merge???

I hope someone will be kind enough to help me, cause im bursting with ideas on how to use this in some new tracks, and i cant work with it right now =/

-- and sorry for the "double post" in advance, but im desperate and i felt nobody was checking the old post i did, because of it having the name ableton in it ( due to people maybe not owning it.. ) - and hope this way i might get someone to help me get on the right path again..

I use live 7 and use my LP just like you describe; as master controller for softsynths and as its own instrument. A lot of times I leave local control on and just hit the phatty's output on/off button when I want to use it only as a controller. But I don't remember ever having the problems you describe with local off, either.

Be sure midi merge is off (set to "none") on the LP... Try experimenting with selecting "external" ON for the LP MIDI input on the midi/sync preferences tab... Try connecting the phatty using std. MIDI instead of USB, if it's an option... Do any of these things make a difference?

I love Live but I have always felt like it's not as solid with respect to MIDI handling as it should be. I will try to get up and running with Live 8 soon, so hopefully I can compare notes.

Let me know how you get on...

Hey Amos,

Thanks for your input. First of all - what a genious way of handling it: leaving local ctrl on - and disabling output for other synths. Brilliant - I didnt even think of that.. =)

I think i have fixed it now - i dont exactly know how, but i do know some key pointers:

1) Leave your input and output midi channel to the SAME. If i do select one for instance 1 for input and 2 for output, and set that up correspondingly in AB 8 it ends up garbling stuff over time. Why, i dont know.

2) If you drag and drop midi notes from another clip to your moogs clip, it might not play - you have to reselect your sound then on the moog to make it play. NOTE: This also means you might wanna save your newly edited sound before trying out a clip.

3) I have NOT enabled sync in options for input and output on the midi pref tab in AB 8 for the LP - this seemed to also help alot.

Thats about all i know for now, but right now its working .. i just hope it will keep on working that way ;)

Next problem im having is that im hearing some cracks and pops in the audio - they came all of a sudden so im hoping it was just my OS / RAM getting tired.. and ill test that again later today =)

Other than that, im in love with my LP!
