I hear a lot of great moog basslines that have just a little bit of distortion on them. Maroon 5's tune "Makes Me Wonder" is a good example. Does anyone know what a decent cost effective pedal would be do get that bite that they get on the bass?

For distortion, I like the RAT. The RAT sounds kind of like the Overload circuit in the Little Phatty, but gives more gain and some tonal control.

For fuzz, I like the Z Vex Mastotron. Here's an example of the Mastotron:

I like the old Danelectro Fab Tone, and the Danelectro Grilled Cheese mini pedal. Your tastes may vary. Haven't tried the new Dano stuff, but I like the old stuff. You can usually find the burgundy Fab Tone used for 20-40 USD.

which rat is everyone using? i know there are a few of them. i'm trying to get a cruncy / biting type bass tone out of the moog. let me know. thanks!

these days i'm using a Electro-Harmonix bass blogger. it's a fuzzer or an overdrive. i like it.

For synthesizer distortion, Boss MT-2 Metal Zone is a fantastic little pedal. Love it. RAT is great too, but somehow the Metal Zone just clicks more with me. For fuzz, I'd love to get a Malekko B:Assmaster, but at the moment I'm doing fine with a Z-Vex FuzzFactory and a Fender Blender.

I have a RAT 2 that I use on guitar, Moog, drum machines, . . .

I use a Blackstar HT-Dist and an Electro Harmonix Bif Muff (the russian version). The HT gives a great full frequency valve overdrive sound, and I find it's good for things with fast attack. The Muff I like for its overall fuzziness but doesn't respond as well to high frequencies or sharp percussive sounds.

Usually I run it through both, one hard left one hard right, and then stick the LP in the middle, either with the phase reversed or not, depending on the sound. That's plenty distortion for me

I saw several Spleen United shows last week, and did some chat with them.
Rune Wehner swore on MT-2 for his Juno 106 and his MS-20 and tweak the hell out of it on the stage over and over again. Sounded so mean.

I tried several distortion pedals but most of them are crap for keyboards. I even tried H&K Tube Factor, only good for one preset so far . And the fuzz factory didn't work great for my taste on the LP.

Gotta check the metal zone, and try the behringer's cheap pedals also. They have lines of metal pedals to choose, the thing for me is that it should have EQ on it cos some of them are too muddy or too bright sometimes (for me at least).

Anyway, have you heard of behringer RV-600 reverb pedal? that's a big bang for your bucks for the LP! Gosh .. i'm a big fan of cheap pedals .. it's all about how we use and control it on the application. Good luck!

cheap gear has it's place, now and then you find some truly unique tones often attributed to low quality parts or sacrifices made which ended up making the instrument/effect sound unique. Heck, look at the Roland TR-606 and TB-303. Cheapo boxes you could easily pick up at Radioshack at one point. Now, legends.

Behringer has some surprising stuff too, albeit they seem to be getting away with blatant copywrite infringement pretty frequently. Have you seen their Memory Man clone? Jeeeeez.

Did you mean the vintage time machine? gosh that one's good! also has chorus & vibrato that can be used without the delay feature i heard .. looks good too. Well, for me the RV600 is good solution for Line 6 Verbzilla (also has that sweepy fx), and that VM1 is for Deluxe Memory Man. Rust resistant ( plastic baby ) and If they broke, heck .. buy another pair

Wait, that time you can buy 303 and 606 on radioshack? for how much was it? hot dang, i saw someone selling tb303 for $1800 on ebay .. i bet it makes the old radioshack employees nuts by not investing those stuffs

crazy, no?

and yeah 303s/606s were consumer grade kit, commercial failures in fact, hence why there are so few units (particularly the 303) in the market.
