Taurus 2 help + Moogerfoogers advice needed

I am new to the forum, and I just had some general questions about some gear I have. I own a taurus 2 & two moogerfoogers: murf and ring mod.

First, I am not experienced with the Taurus 2, and I can't seem to get it to function properly. The synth brain is working fine, but I had no cable to connect it. I went out and purchased a five pin DIN cable, and connected the pedals to the brain. There is sound, but the scale or notes do not change when pressing different pedals, just the same noise all the time that can be manipulated with the brain. I assumed I either bought the wrong type of DIN cable (maybe there was a specific cable I needed) or the voltage output is not functioning correctly on the pedals. Any ideas or advice ?

Secondly, I wanted to experiment with setups and usage of the moog gear I own. I have seen some cool stuff over the years with people connecting different synth and moogerfoogers together to work -with- each other. The Taurus and the Moogerfoogers have all these different inputs and outputs on the back, and I honestly have never known how to utilize them.

All this stuff is new to me, but I am hoping to find some advice on how I can work my Taurus 2, Ring Mod, and Murf to their full capabilities.

Please note, I am not an old moog dude, I am completely new to this stuff, and I hope I am in the right place.

Welcome! First off, the cable might not be correct. If it's a MIDI cable, well MIDI only uses three of the five conductors, so perhaps not all of them are wired. Best way would be to test the cable with a multimeter.

The MuRF doesn't have too much in the way of CV (you could advance the step with a note on gate), but you should be able to do some neat stuff with the ring mod. Like tracking the pitch CV and using the 102 as an external oscillator, or using its LFO somehow.

Can you list the jacks on the back, or post a pic? It probably has pitch and gate inputs and outputs, right?

Essentially, the question that you are asking is the very first on a long Journey in Analog SYnthesis. Sources go to destinations. Outputs go to inputs.

I don't know what kind of interface the Taurus has for CVs.

But yeah you can use the Ringmod as an extra Osc perhaps with some attenuation. You can also use the LFO from the ringmod to modulate the filter cutoff of the Taurus provided that theres inputs.

Even simply confining yourself to the audio signal chain only you can still get some great sounds.

If you really want some added frosting on the Moog cake, get a cp251. That will give you about 5 times the synthesis capabillity.

You just might find yourself getting addicted!

Thanks guys.

As for the midi cable, it definitely is not a midi cable. It was just a standard DIN cable. After the issue came up, I thought maybe moog has a proprietary cable to connect the two pieces together.

As for the Taurus connections:

Standard Instrument Cable: (same as moog rogue)
Audio Out - Audio In - Trigger In/Out - Keyboard In/Out
+
Din Cable:
Remote Keyboard

here is a general picture for the inputs, not mine, but a standard rogue pic:

The Murf connections:
Audio In - Rate - Mix - Envelope - LFO/Sweep
Audio Out Left - Right - Tap/Step

-
The Ring Mod connections:
AUDIO IN - AUDIO OUT
FREQUENCY - RATE - LFO AMOUNT - MIX
AUX AUDIO IN - LFO OUT - CARRIER OUT
(this link is close, but not exact)

I am still trying to wrap my head around the old analog gear, and the meaning of a lot of this stuff. I have sorta stumbled on this gear over time, and just used them individually with instruments (or in series).

I will have to test out & read up a bit more on your responses.

As for the Cp251, very cool, and had my eye on one, but I simply can't afford any Moog purchases at the moment.

So the nothing with the Murf ? I was hoping to find some cool ways to connect the different pieces to learn some more.

Wanna learn some real basics? Patch the Carrier Out from the Ring Mod to the Audio In of the MuRF. Audio Out from MuRF to amp. Make sure the amp is turned way down, as this can get loud fast. This should give you a very small idea of what analog is capable of. You can also watch my YouTube vids. Here ya go: http://www.moogmusic.com/forum/viewtopi ... sc&start=0

Keep in mind that the Trigger on the Rogue is a bi directional jack. Someone more knowledgable than myself will have to explain that one but if you had another synth like a Mirco or Voyager then they should be able to trigger eachother through that jack with the right cord.

Now you might can send the LFO output to the Mix input on the Murf to phase the Murf's effect in and out. THe LFO could also speed and slow the rate of the Murf.

I think you might be able to set the tempo of the murf with that tap tempo input from the LFO out.

You can also use the LFO out to sweep the envelope.

Basically just hook some chords up and try it out. CHeck out the manual for tips on how to hook things up.
Those two particular pedals probably aren't the MOST WONDERFUL for the cv options that you have with the Taurus, but you should be able to do some really cool things in the audio realm. A cp251 would give you a lot more options.

With a cp251 youd have an extra LFO a noise source a S%H, mults attenuators and a lag processor, but I don't want to wet your whistly for one of those if you can't afford one. I know the feeling.
