But I was told it has a distinct sound, and I would probably recognize it in a few songs if I knew what it sounded like, i'm sure... Can anyone help me out here?

Why not go to YouTube and run a search for Moog? Also search Little Phatty, MiniMoog, Moog Modular, Moog Voyager, Micromoog, Multimoog, Moog Sonic Six, Memorymoog, Polymoog, Moog Prodigy, Moog Liberation, or Moog Taurus for specific synths. And if you've heard Rush, ELP, or Pink Floyd, or Gary Numan, you've heard a Moog.

EDIT: After Googling your screen name (rockdiva87) A whole lotta results came up...mostly alcohol and metal related. There was a picture of a beer keg on deviantART, as well as a lot of posts on beer pong forums. I noticed that you have a profile on bellaonline as well. IF you are the same rockdiva87, that is

EDIT: Well, I see you made a helpful post on the Theremin forums, so you're officially NOT a spammer! This is great! You'll want to check out Lania's post on the Little Phatty forum titled "Reproduce a sound you hear?" Excellent dual oscillator goodness with lots of classic Moog filtering.

Welcome to the forum,

THe Moog sound I think is best distinguished by its FILTER which is a classic Voltage Controlled 24db Transistor Ladder Low Pass Filter designed by Bob Moog. Something in the circuitry was technically "flawed" which led to its unique sound that just about every other synthesizer tries to emulate (vintage, software, and modeling synthesizers).

You can hear a great demo of the various modules of a classic Moog Modular SYnthesizer (incliding the famous filter) here:

http://theremin.music.uiowa.edu/MoogDemo.html

You can always check out "Flashlight" from PFunk for some classic MiniMoog basslines.

Oh for a shameless plug, you can go to my myspace page and hear some original examples of things that Ive done with the MicroMoog and the various MoogerFoogers.

There are a lot of artists here on the forum (some more famous than others) and if you are interested in hearing how some people that you can actually interact with are using Moog Products then check out THe Volt Per Octaves and any other artist that you come across on here with a myspace page on their signature. There is quite a bit of talent on these forums and a lot of Love for Dr. Moog and his inventions.

You can also listen to some Mort Garson or ELP, YES, Pink FLoyd and even the Beatles Abbey Road for some classic Moog sounds. Tangerine Dream did a lot of stuff with Moogs as well.

Respectfully,
Eric

That's right! And we do a great job of guarding these forums! (Well, I do anyway) But don't forget to check out my post on the Little Phatty forum titled "Well, my LP is going out of town..." as there are some great pictures on page 3 as well as some amusing banter starting on page 2. No sounds from me yet, but Friday I will be posting a YouTube video. My YouTube account is Voltor07. 8)
