moogerfooger phaser with synthesizer

Hi,
I come from a background of playing guitar for a very long time and the only phaser I've ever really used until recently was the MXR Phase 90 or Phase 100, which only has 1 or 2 knobs and with guitar it's hard to make either sound bad and easy to get some nice, subtle sounds from them. I started playing synth a few years ago and recently got a Moogerfooger phaser and am having a difficult time getting sounds from it that I totally like. I understand what the controls are, but as it sweeps through the frequencies it hits some pretty sour spots for me and sounds pretty muddy (not in a good way) at points and I'm having trouble smoothing it out - especially with the 12 stage setting. I've tried tweaking the resonance, the sweep start point, the LFO settings, etc... without much success. Someone suggested adding a little inaudible white or pink noise to the sound signal to give the phaser something more to work with and that has helped some but I'm still struggling a bit. To give some context I'd love to know how to get a Tangerine Dream and/or Klaus Schulze type sound. I know about the Compact Phasing and you might say that I can't get that exact sound with another phaser, and that's fine - I figure the Moogerfooger phaser can't be a bad phaser and anyone familiar with it who could suggest a settings patch to approximate that kind of sound or to even get better or maybe similar sounds out of it used with a synth would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
