I have a 101 and a 102 and i'm looking to get some sample and hold generator. I know there is one in the CP but that a little expensive right now..

Is there a cheaper unit to use? Maybe a Doepfer module or something?

The 251 is pretty cheap for what it does... A Doepfer module would also require a case and power supply.

Well you would need a power supply and a rack frame for this too plus its Do it yourself but if you have any experience with that, this looks very cheap.

But does the Oakley unit have a built-in noise source and LFO? If not, you would still need those signals from somewhere to get the "classic" S/H sounds.

if you prowl around on ebay long enough ive seen CPs go for as little as $250 (US currency) for the old model with the red jacks, pre-active attenuators

I have also looked into "low cost" alternatives to add control processors to my MF pedals, such as a Sample and Hold, LFO, and Envelope Generator.

The CP-251 packs a lot of "bang for the buck" into one small enclosure. It gives your the S&H, Noise Source, Dual waveform LFO which can be controlled via a footpedal, 4 input CV mixer, Attenuated jacks, and a four way mult that can allow you to use one pedal to control three functions at the same time!

Any type of modular setup (such as Doepfer, dotcom, oakley, etc.) require an initial investment into a case/power supply which would probably cost more than the S&H module itself. This approach only makes sense if you are looking to invest long-term into a modular synthesizer, as you are not saving any money up-front. However, the modular setup allows you to add other functions that Moog does not currently sell, such as Envelope Generators, Sequencers, Pitch to Voltage, CV to MIDI, Vocoder, or other filter types such as HP or BP.

I plan on adding the CP-251 soon, and I hope that Moog continues to more modular type functions to the MF product line, as I like the fact that I am not tied to a certain type of case, and I do not worry about how much room or power that I still would have in a modular type case.
