I'm having a problem. I've never used the filter envelope, as awesome as it is, because there is some aspect of it that I don't understand.

I need someone to help explain the interplay between the filter and volume envelopes.

I often use the volume envelope. When I try to use the filter envelope. And let's say i play a line staccato for a little while. At some point, the tone will change significantly. and then it will switch back. I think it has something to do with the delay or the sustain on the VE. But I just can't really wrap my head around what's going on.

Can anybody help explain why it sounds like it's switching between two totally different tones?

Is it dependent on the patch? Some patches have the envelopes routed to different destinations (e.g. pitch); it's in a sub-menu.

Otherwise, I'm not too sure what your problem is, can you explain any further?

Basically, there isn't one. The envelopes are independent of one another, unless they are programmed to interact in some way.

To prove this to your self, pick a preset and initialize the Voyager (EDIT menu 1.3). There is no programmed interaction between the envelopes in this default preset. If you are still hearing something weird here, there may be a problem with your Vger.

From your description, it's possible that Aftertouch (key pressure) is responsible for the tone change you heard. Aftertouch on older and unmodified Vgers is pretty much an ON/OFF thing, so maybe that's what you observed?

Does the drastic change happen while you’re still playing staccato or do you play a few notes legato ? If the Voyager is set for single trigger and you go from one key to the other without releasing the envelopes will not re trigger, if you release a key and strike another one the envelopes will re trigger. If you set the Voyager to mulit trigger the envelopes will re trigger even if you play legato. If that’s the case Greg’s point about After touch could be the problem.

I recorded a clip of the symptom and put it up on myspace (http://www.myspace.com/theartfuldodgermd) under the title "test." For this, I initialized all the parameters and then adjusted the filter envelope: A: 0, D: 86, S: 87, R: 58, Amount: 100

I also set it to multitrigger, although i recorded the clip with single trigger. it does it both ways.

As for aftertouch, I don't know if i have the latest aftertouch update, but, I'm fairly sure i do, because when I use the after touch on purpose, it has a pretty responsive sweet spot. Also, there's kind of a step to it in the keyboard isn't there; that is, you press the key and it hits a stop, then it will press down further after the initial stopper to engage the aftertouch, right?

Likely to be unrelated, but just in case, i do have a problem with my voyager staying in tune. Usually it's pretty severe at start up, but after warming it up, it calms down, although one of the oscillators will occasionally drift back out.

So yeah, if a couple people could try and initialize their voyager, set the filter envelope like i have it, and tell me if theirs does the same thing...man i hope it does. i can't afford to send it to moog to get it fixed right now....
