Rudess LP Demo sound?

How the hell did Jordan get that sound out of the LP?
It sounds like a distorted guitar. Especially in the part at the end, when he plays over a backing track. This sound is great.
The FreqBox is bypassed, so it's not that.
Any ideas?

I agree, it does sound good. To me, the patch sounds like two saws in unison with LFO vibrato, and the output going thru a delay. I could be wrong, but I don't hear any outboard distortion.
The thing I can't figure out (and I'm glad you pointed out this video) is the very last gesture Jordan plays. He plays a minor third trill at the top of the keyboard in the 8' range, and then bends it down into the 32' range. The LP can only bend down 1 octave. I'm hearing a downward bend of at least four octaves. That's what I'm curious about.

Hello,
Not familiar with the Phatty's particulars, but I believe he mentioned using using a controller pedal for pitch bending.
Regards,
Lawrence

Yes, he uses the foot pedal for that final bend.

Very interesting. Presumably, he has set up the CP-251 to "tune" the pedal by attenuating the voltage such that when the pedal is floored the LP is at concert pitch. Sound right?

Yes, indeed!
This technique is described in the LP User's Manual. See page 42 of the Tribute Edition, or page 55 of the Stage Edition.

Correct.

Thanks, Richard, this is good to know. I've been planning to buy a Kenton Pro Solo, but the CP-251's ability to restrict CV range in this (musical) way is making me reconsider...

On second thought... MP-201

Hi, new member here, and I just got my Little Phatty stage edition a few weeks ago, and I absolutely love it. I'm fairly new to synthesis though, just learning about it, so I hope this question isn't too stupid, but it relates as well to the sound in the Jordan Rudess video, so that's why I'm posting it here. Just before he demostrates what the Freqbox can do in the fisrt video, he plays the LP and says, that's just the Phatty. It's a very ghostly, spacey kind of sound. Now, I've been playing around with my LP for the past few weeks, and as far as I've been able to work it, I can't get any ghostly, spacey sound like that out of it. So how is he doing that? What am I missing?

Welcome, Cosmo. Try this:
Osc 1 and 2 Levels off (minimum).
Filter Resonance maximum, so it oscillates by itself.
Keyboard Amount maximum.
Filter Cutoff button lit.
Turn Filter knob with one had while playing notes with the other hand, just like Jordan is doing in the video.
Route output thru a delay.

Ah, very interesting...I see what's happening there. Opens up some new possibilities! Thanks sine!
