SOURCE AND LITTLE PHATTY

Hello there,
I've seen a lot Moog Sources ebayed lately and it seems that people offloaded them to buy the Little Phatty.
I wonder how the Source's sound compares to LP.
Maybe also reliability problems play important role, as the Source's membrane keypad is it's achille's heel.
(Although, somewhere in the ebay I've seen people selling replacements)
Any opinions about the two Moogs?
Thanks and sorry for the poor English
Nick

I have both, and love them both, but the LP is getting more of my attention.
Except for the "sequencer" and arpeggiator, the LP will do everything that the Source will do and more (now that S&H has been added). Since you can't sync either mode with MIDI, they are pretty much useless in the studio anyway.
My Source has a bit more of a "sweet" sine lead than the LP--closer to the sound of my Model D. That is primarily what I use it for--it is a lovely sound.
I really can't see the reason to own both if you are thinking about purchasing both. But since I already own one of each, I won't be selling the Source.
Certainly the LP makes more sense to purchase now, unless you just have to own something vintage. No tempermental touch pad, brand new electronics, better feeling keyboard, warranty, upgradeable software, and a much easier user interface. It is very difficult to "see" the settings of a Source. You need to hit every button to see it's setting. The LP, while not quite one knob per function, is much easier to assess from a glance (and a few button pushes).

I posted some files on here a while back doing a direct comparison between the 2. The source and lp are virtually identical when copied setting for setting by ear.
The main differences are that the Lp has a tighter low end and a slightly less buzzy high end on the saw wave in particular, but this is a general thing about the new moog sound compared to the old.
You cant go wrong with either. If i had the choice now i would def by the lp for sure.

What can the LP do more? The Source has S&H and S&H Filter.
That said, anyone new to the market is probably better off buying a current model synth rather than a vintage board. You can get parts and service on the LP and Voyager, its tougher to get on vintage gear.
If you have the $$, consider a Voyager. The LP is too limited unless you are primarily going to use it for are lead and bass lines. Yeah it can do more, but not much. But its worth what you pay for it.

the lp is too limited? Thats nonsense... too limited compared to what? Its capable of just about any sound i can imagine. It does many things the voyager cant. With your logic you could therefore say the voyager is too complex.

I am sorry, but if this is true, your imagination is rather limited. The Moog LP is a very limited synthesizer compared to almost everything else on the current market. The LP´s strength is that it can do the few things you can do with it with a superior sound quality. Furthermore the Moog LP is the easiest synth to program and/ or tweak that I know ... it always sounds great, no matter how you tweak the parameters.

Thanks to everyone for the contributions to my questions.
I'm thinking sometime, to purchase an LP, as it has many pluses: it's a MOOG, (now I think I have everyone covered) it's new, it has support from a healthy company (hurray!!!) and the demos and the videos I saw, were very satisfying. And I love the overload feature.
Already I own an vintage modular synth, so it's nice to have an brand new Moog.
Although no Moog was ever heavy at the features (exept the modulars of course) but I guess the reasons why people love the Moog sound, are THESE filters, THESE oscillators and THESE snappy envelopes.
Personaly, when I'm looking for a synth, I look at the basic character of the machine. If the osc's and filters sounding strong, then you know that you can have nice sounds out of the board, whatever you do. I don't like it when companies try to hide their machines's weaknesses with complex presets, effects etc.
By the way right now I'm writing this post I wear my Moog t-shirt.
Yeah!
Thanks again, happy and keep making music
Sorry for the poor English!

Perhaps the LP is limited when it comes out of the box, but I think a lot of people don't realize its possibilities with the CV ins and Midi. Those features in addition to its fantastic tone make the Little Phatty a very versatile and flexible instrument. A simple addition like a MF ring modulator with its LFO outs can totally transform the LP.

My imagination is not limited in any way! You dont know me or my music.
I dont consider the lp limited and i own many other synths. Less is more sometimes. Think about that for one minute. Its not about having millions of features its about hands on tweakability with high quality sound, and i prefer the simpler interface. I can imagine a sound and get it more quickly on the lp than on any other synth i own (see my signature for the other synths i own ;o)). Ive got some very good points of reference in these synths. The lp has never let me down. If i need more complex ill fire up the memorymoog or voyager.
