Improving My Mixing Workflow

Hi everyone,
I’ve recently started setting up a small home studio, and while I’m comfortable with recording ideas and layering tracks, I’ve realized that my mixing workflow is still very messy. I often find myself tweaking EQ and compression randomly, and by the time I export a mix, it doesn’t sound balanced when I play it on different speakers or headphones.
What I’d like to focus on is building a more structured approach:
How to establish a consistent gain staging process.
When and how to use reference tracks effectively.
Practical exercises to train my ears for EQ and stereo imaging.
Developing habits that make the whole mixing process smoother and less overwhelming.
I’d love to hear how others here have refined their mixing workflow, especially when moving from casual demos to something closer to professional quality. Did you follow a specific learning path, or was it more trial-and-error over time? Any resources, routines, or tips that really made a difference for you would be greatly appreciated.
Looking forward to learning from your experiences!
Thanks,
Lorde Dam
