Learning Sound Design

Hi everyone,
I’m new here and fairly new to Moog as well. I’ve been using mine for about two months now. I love exploring the sounds, but I still feel like I’m only scratching the surface.
One skill I’d really like to improve is shaping sounds in a more intentional way, instead of just turning knobs until I stumble across something I like. Do you have any advice, techniques, or exercises for building a better ear and understanding of how to control the synth?
Would love to hear how you all approached this when starting out.
Thanks!
Skyler

Hi Skyler, welcome to the forum!

My first advice will be: check the manual of your synth. Moog's manuals often contain some basics about sound and synthesis.

What is your synth, by the way?

Beyond that, exploration is clearly a good way to discover. In function of how complex/deep is your synth, you may want to first disable or avoid some functions to keep things simple, obvious and direct. Even better: program a "default patch" (or draw it on a patch sheet if your synth doesn't have presets) and start fresh each time. This will allow you to get familiar with the different parameters. Then you can add more and more on top of these foundations.

Finally, although I'm not a youtube guy, I'm quite sure you can find some good tutorials online. I bet other forumers can suggest more than me :)
