I know this is probably a dumb question but i am new to this (recently took delivery of an EB) what is pot mapping and is it worth investing in the editing software?

You don't need the editing software to do pot mapping.

Pot mapping allows you to assign one knob's function to another. For example: you could have your modwheel modifying the usual fare on the modwheel bank, but you can also have it act to adjust spacing as if you were turning the spacing knob as you move the modwheel. Or it could be the resonance knob (pot) or an envelope's decay knob. There are endless possiblilites. You could also assign oscillator two's wave pot to the cutoff pot, or whatever. You don't need the editing software, just look in your editing menu on your voyager. It's possible that older OSs don't have the capabilities (I can't remember) so you might need to upgrade to the latest OS; but that's free.

I personally don't use the editing software. I suppose if you want to move patches around more quickly and categorize them, then maybe it would be handy. But as far as editing patches, it's not necessary.

Mark is quite right - you don't need the Editor to program Pot Mapping or edit patches.

But given that the Editor allows you to view and adjust all of the Voyager's parameters from a single screen, including those buried in the menus (all four Pot Maps, TS control, Pitch Bend, etc.), you might find it very useful to understand and program sounds. I'd suggest checking out the Editor for yourself and see if you like it. You can download a demo version from the Moog site.

Without the Editor, you'll need to navigate through the Voyager menus. For this, you might find the Voyager OS Menu Reference handy. It's a chart all of the commands found in the PANEL, EDIT and MASTER menus. You can download a copy from MoogSpace:

Hoax! Haven't heard from you in a while - nice to have you back on the forum!

FYI: You can join MoogSpace for free (limited to 60 days from time you sign on) and have total access to everything that is there, including the 'On The Map' article I wrote for SquareWave a while back.

I was just teaching myself pot mapping yesterday. All it took was a couple minutes and some imagination and I was on my way. I started with the preset/default/standard one oscillator tone and after about 6 hours I had 40 new presets I created using different pot mappings.

I bought the editor software and even though I haven't used it yet "waiting on new soundcard for MIDI" I can already see the organizational benefits that is provides, mainly point and click use, and saving patches.

Didn't I read somewhere that there are 800 combinations per pot map?

More than that actually. Each pot map has 40 sources and 40 destinations, so that's 1600 combinations for each map. And each one can have three values (25, 50, or 100%), plus each can be normal or inverted...

yeah, it's a lot of possibilities.

The 'On The Map' article has a dozen or so Pot Mapping tricks that were submitted by SquareWave members. It's a good place to start exploring what you can do with Pot Mapping.

I really don't get the resentment regarding my posts on MoogSpace. When I uploaded things on the SquareWave site, nobody ever said a word when I announced these postings here. Never once did anyone say "Geez, dude, SquareWave again?". Somehow, with MS, everything is different. Why? Is it because Moog charges for the site? If so, you should take it up with them.

Over and over, I see the same questions asked on these forums. 'How do I do this?', or 'how does this work?'. These questions are usually posted by people who are new to the Voyager, or are new to the forums, and don't realize that the answers are readily available if they know where to look. If there's already a document that answers their questions (like the article on Pot Mapping), I point them to it, so they get the help they need (Len, the person who started this thread, seemed to appreciate the assistance). And there's another benefit: some forum members - ones who have been around for a while - read these posts and end up 'discovering' this information, too, even though it's been available online for a year or more.

The information offered on MoogSpace is there because that's where Moog-related information belongs. It's one of the main reasons why the site exists, and why SquareWave information now appears there.

That said, you can choose to sign up for MoogSpace or not. I have no stake, so it doesn't matter to me either way.

Gregs right....not only am I a lot wiser about pot mapping but I,ve learned a lot more to boot. I,m totaly new to music synthsis (I,m a drummer..oops !!) the voyager is my first synth and to compound matters its taken seven weeks to learn how to control the voyager with a guitar as we dont have a keyboard player (It works great by the way) so I really dont care what site the info is on, I,m just greatful for all the help and advice I,ve had from you all...Thanks again.
