Hi Folks.
Long time guitarist with a SubPhatty here. Got this in a swap for a Bass amp. I have some experience with DAWs and soft synths but none with hardware ones.
I've played with the presets and understand how to save them once I have something worth saving. (would probably start over-writing the 4th bank drum slots for starters)
My question concerns what would be called "takeover mode" in soft synths with midi controller.
I have watched Youtube videos on creating sounds in "panel mode" but don't understand just how the knobs function when used from a preset. Here I refer to not only the factory presets, but any I may save myself.
Obviously I'm interested in Bass and Lead presets, but also ones I could save and multi sample to MPC/Akai Force for polyphonic playing.
Any help here greatly appreciated.

Normally when you tweak something the value jumps from the stored value to whatever position the knob/slider is at. With takeover mode ( sometimes called pass through mode) the value won't change untill you pass through the stored value resulting in a smoother change.

In panel mode you no longer hear the stored patch. You get the sound of what all the front panel controls are set to, like with a synth that has no patch storage.
Sometimes referred to as WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get)

... and there is a third mode called Relative mode, which is really handy.

KNOB MODE
When you change presets, it’s unlikely that the
positions of the knobs will match the values of the
preset’s parameters. When you turn a knob to make
changes, how it responds will depend on its mode.
To enter Knob mode, engage Shift mode and press
BANK 2, BANK 4, PATCH 3, and PATCH 4. Press the
low C to engage Snap mode, in which the value jumps
to the knob’s current position as soon as you begin
turning it. Press C# to engage Pass-Through mode, in
which turning the knob has no effect until it reaches its
preset value and then takes effect. Press D to engage
Relative mode (the default), in which turning the knob
up or down slightly causes a minor change in value, and
turning it further causes a increasingly greater change
in value. This allows the value to “catch up” with the
knob’s position and prevents any sudden jumps.
