What is your favorite Moog synthesizer and why?

Post by gautamb11 » Tue Aug 29, 2023 2:22 am

I just finished reading the new Bob Moog biography “Switched On” and it’s got me thinking about all the synthesizers made by Moog. Do you have a favorite? If so, tell me about it and why you like it so much. Would love to hear everyone’s take!

I’d have to say my favorite is the Moog Voyager. It was Bob’s fully realized Minimoog with lots of tech he had been working on over his career. The Minimoog Model D being a close second.

Here’s a funny quote I have to share from the book:

“Borden recalled that Bob received a letter from someone who'd been in the audience that day: "It amounted to a long hate letter about my music, condemning the invention of such a musically destructive piece of trash and that he should destroy all of the synthesizers that he had made before more damage could be done. He absolutely loved this letter and every time he thought of it he would start laughing very loudly. He hung it up on his wall in the office.”

Taurus 1. After all of these decades, it still gives me goosebumps every time I fire it up and play it. The entire house shakes. 8)

System 55, IIP, IIIP. My hero Isao Tomita squeezed a complete classic orchestra out of those modulars. Cloning the System 55 gave me many insights in modular systems and how powerful they are.

Dunno if I could pick a favourite. The Voyager is pretty versatile though.

An Emerson modular would be nice to have

Moog 1 for me, will never be able to afford one but got the chance to play one a month ago and my mind was blown into a million pieces.

I’d have to say Multimoog. I just love the presence, tightness, and rawness of its sound.

The Moog Voyager is my top pick too! It's a masterpiece with Bob's genius all over it. And that quote from the book?
