Mother 32 clock sync stops working with page 8 step 2 turned off

Hello!
I recently acquired the moog sound studio trio, and I'm in the process of incorporating into my existing system.
I'm sending clock and notes over mid from a deluge into the mother 32, and then clock out from M32 via assignable out into subh, and from there into dfam.
This works, except that run I start on the deluge, it plays the M32 sequence, which I do not want. I want to sequence the M32 from the deluge.
So I learned that after updating to v2 of M32 firmware, I can achieve this by toggling step 2 (Follow MIDI Start Stop (On / Off) on page 8 of setup.
And it works! It no longer engages the M32 sequence when I hit play.
However when I do this, it no longer sends clock out of M32 to the subh.
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong so that I can send midi and clock from deluge into M32 without running the M32 sequencer, and still send clock on to subh(and then dfam).
