ok guys i need your help.

i've always been fairly hardware orientated (using real synths and multitracks) but now i want to use my computer a little bit.

I need a program that can handle all types of audio files, and provide a wave visual that you can edit, and burn audio CDs. It has to be simple, cheap and work on a Mac.
i used to use the program called "audio view" that's part of "audio station" which came free with IBM aptivas back in the day, i really like that program and crave for something similar.

i also need some way of digitizing the audio to import on the computer, i was looking at the EDIROL UA1-X it looks like it would provide the perfect bridge between my multitrack and my computer and it has a nice price. any thoughts other suggestions?

Steinbergs Wavelab is a really good one. It has an extreme amount of parameters.

Im hoping that my partner will get a sound card that has the digital optical input/outputs because since im mainly using a roland vs 840 right now then surely it wouldnt lose any sound quality when putting it on the pc.

As far as Mac compatibillity i haven't the slightest.

In case this is useful, I've got an RME 9652 soundcard that I'm just about to put on ebay. I changed to the 9632 because I prefer analogue outputs. Let me know if it's the kind of card your partner would be looking for.

What about Protools Free?

It's pretty good, especially for free!!

Logic express is a very feature packed platform. No, it's not free I think it's $100? But in addition to basic sequencing (multitrack recording with wave editing) you get tons of apple loops, soft synths, quality effects and pro features. Also as you get more comfortable with it, you can move up to Logic Pro which is just amazing. Grab a small firewire interface and you're ready to rock. I made many great sounding tracks with Logic express and an edirol FA-101. One more thing, of course with Logic you'll get absolute and simple mac compatability and support.
